Things to do in Bukit Lawang
#100waysoftravel
Bukit Lawang, a charming village on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is best known for its incredible jungle experiences and wildlife, particularly orangutan sightings. Here’s a list of top things to do:
Orangutan Trekking: Bukit Lawang is one of the best places in the world to see semi-wild Sumatran orangutans. You can take a guided jungle trek ranging from half a day to multi-day hikes to spot orangutans, monkeys, Thomas leaf monkeys, and other unique wildlife.
Tubing Down the Bahorok River
Floating down the Bahorok River on an inner tube is an exciting and refreshing way to see the area from the water. Many jungle treks even end with a tubing ride back to Bukit Lawang.
Birdwatching and Wildlife Spotting
Besides orangutans, Bukit Lawang is home to abundant wildlife, including macaques, hornbills, monitor lizards, and exotic birds. A guided trek will give you the best chances for birdwatching.
Enjoy Local Food and Relax by the River
Bukit Lawang has many small cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy local Sumatran dishes, fresh juices, and Indonesian coffee. Enjoy the peaceful ambiance by the river, and maybe even try cooking classes.
Bat Cave Exploration
Just outside of Bukit Lawang lies a cave filled with bats and fascinating rock formations. It’s an adventurous short trek and a unique experience for those interested in spelunking.
Bukit Lawang offers a mix of adventure, relaxation, and culture, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and conservation-minded travelers.

Jungle trek in Bukit Lawang - Indonesia
My first stop in Indonesia 🇮🇩
Travelling to the jungle of Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra to witness the wild orangutans, critically endangered and one of two places in the world where they can be seen!
After a solid day of trekking I was lucky to see a variety of primates in the jungle and captured some stunning photos. A special thanks to the amazing guides at @sumatracheekymonkeys for making this a great experience from start to finish

Exciting camping at Svarga Simelir
#campingfun
One of the most fun camping spots. The location is not far from Pamah View. To enter the location is in the same direction as the pamah cottage and there are lots of toilets but unfortunately the water sometimes runs out. There is also a river flowing around here so you can play in the river.
The river is also not deep so it is safe if you bring children without being afraid to bathe there.
The entrance fee is 10,000 IDR. Rent a campsite 25,000 IDR. There is also tent rental for IDR 125,000.
Address: pamah simelir, Sei Bingai, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra 20771.

MONAS, The National Monument of Indonesia
During my visit to Tugu Monas in Jakarta, I arrived by bus, which was quite convenient as there’s a nearby bus stop that made getting there easy. Once I arrived, I noticed that there are several gates to enter the area, so it's good to check which gate is closest depending on where you're coming from. I visited on a day when there weren’t too many tourists around, making it a very pleasant and peaceful experience. The spacious grounds around the monument allowed for a relaxing walk, and I didn’t feel crowded at all. For those who buy tickets to enter the monument, they provide a buggy service to help you get to the entrance, which I found to be a nice convenience. Although I didn’t go up to the top of the monument, I learned that the tip of the tower is made out of gold, which adds an interesting touch to its historical significance. Overall, my visit to Tugu Monas was a smooth and enjoyable experience, with a nice blend of history and convenience for tourists.
