#timetotravel Must do in Kampot! When we arrived we were greeted with smiles and after a brief chat we were told there is a free tour of the grounds available in Khmer, French and English. We waited for about 20 minutes until the tour began. We walked around the grounds with a guide who is very knowledgeable, we were able to stop for pictures, we were also allowed to sample 2 different types of peppercorn straight from the vines! What an experience. After that we went back to where we waited which had a selection of peppercorns waiting for us to sample with the help of another guide. There are tables that the peppercorn is on display for purchase and also a small bar to buy beverages and pepper ice cream! 10,000% recommend! If you have the time definitely have this on the top of your list. What a highlight for us.

In early 2016, the European Union officially awarded the "Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)" to Kampot pepper. Since then, only pepper grown in the natural environment of Kampot Province can enjoy this name, and its value has risen accordingly. It can be called "the world's best pepper". [La Plantation Kampot Pepper Plantation] is a free attraction, and it also provides free English and French guided tours to take you to the pepper garden. Generally, peppers need to be grown for three years before they can be harvested. White pepper is of the best quality but is the spiciest. It needs to be picked one by one by hand. The aroma is not as obvious as black pepper when eaten directly. It is suitable for stir-frying to bring out its spiciness and aroma. Red pepper is better than black pepper. Black pepper is picked last.

The weather was mostly cloudy, so I didn’t feel like exploring the town center much, but I still joined a full-day tour that included all the main activities. 🚗 Getting Around * Some roads in Kampot are in poor condition, especially after rain. * Best to take a tuk-tuk or join a tour if you want to explore the area comfortably. 🏔️ Bokor Mountain Tour – Wouldn’t recommend on cloudy days I did this tour in the morning. Unfortunately, because of the heavy mist and clouds, we couldn’t see anything clearly. Here’s what it included: * 🧘♂️ Big Buddha Statue – completely hidden by the fog. * 🏨 Old Casino turned Hotel – looked abandoned from the outside but apparently costs around $200/night. Interior looked renovated. * 💧 Waterfall – no water during my visit. * 🐒 Monkeys – the highlight of the tour; saw some along the road. * 🕍 Old Catholic Church – interesting but weather ruined the view. 💡 Tip: Avoid Bokor Mountain tour if the weather is bad or visibility is low. 🚜 Countryside Tour (Afternoon) This tour was much more enjoyable. Here's what we visited: * 🌶️ Pepper Plantation * Learned how black pepper is grown and processed. * Tasted different kinds of pepper. * Products were available to buy directly from the farm. * Kampot pepper is exported globally. * 🕳️ Cave Temple * This ancient temple inside a cave is said to be older than Angkor Wat. * Really unique and worth the visit. * 🧂 Salt Fields * Unfortunately, due to the weather, we couldn't really see much here. 🌇 Sunset in Kampot * Despite the bad weather during the day, the sunset was beautiful on my last evening. * Great views along the riverside.

One of the most memorable highlights of our itinerary is this La Plantation visit where a free guided tour is being offered for a limited time slot per day and you can choose in either English or French Speaking Guide. The whole tour is very informative and entertaining at the same time. Our tour guide suggested this place, locals often call this Secret Lake. The surrounding area is very peaceful and tranquil. We saw mini huts they used for relaxation and noontime siesta. It's hard to imagine that this lake is man-made because it's really huge! According to our guide,many people died here during it's construction so many believed that this serene lake is still haunted. #newyearnewtrip
