Explore Dive site Koh Phra Thong
Starting with this island, I have heard the name for a long time, with the savannah grassland and the sunken ship of HTMS Phra Thong, but I have never seen an underwater picture. And this time, I have a real chance to go explore it for 2 days and 1 night on Koh Phra Thong.
This trip, because there are no dive shops on the island, we used Kru Nui's boat from Koh Khao, so we checked the dive at Koh E Tan first. From where we dived, it is a very wide coral reef. According to the information, it is 300 rai!
But we didn't dive that far, haha. This point is 16 meters deep from the surface, down to 14 meters deep. The water surface is very murky, but the water is clear, like we are in a different place. The hard coral reef looks raw, it shouldn't be a dive site, but it is very wide. There are quite a lot of fish along the reef. The highlight we found was a hump-headed parrotfish!!! So we thought that if we had time, we would definitely find something good. But we did a light check dive. If we had time, we would definitely find something better.
But let's continue!!! From Koh Khao, we took a long boat ride to Koh Phra Thong. The first stop was the Yellow Fish Pile. I thought there would be a lot of Yellowfin Tuna around here, but when I got down, the water was unbelievably clear. The top of the pile was 14 meters, visible from the surface to the deepest 20 meters. There were soft corals in beautiful colors. The big ones were like Richelieu Rock, mostly pink. On this dive, we dived in piles 1-2 at the same time. It was fun. The current was a little bit. In just 45 minutes, we were ready to go up. But I was a little suspicious that there weren’t as many Yellowfin Tuna as I thought. Next, on Dive 3, we learned that the Yellowfin Tuna Pile was very wide. On the previous dive, we only dived in 2 piles. On this dive, we expanded the area and dived for 50 minutes to the north. This made us realize that this spot is a fishing and local fishing spot. However, the small piles are very wide. Every pile has soft corals and sea fans. We saw schools of fish all the time. However, we might encounter a lot of local fishing buoys. If we encounter fish traps, I don’t recommend cutting or destroying them because that’s the way of life of the locals. If we still eat fish, it’s better to leave them the way they are. But in reality, it’s very wide, so we won’t be able to dive all the way. The air ran out before it went up. Personally, I was excited because I had never seen it before. There were many photo spots.
After the 3rd dive, we returned to Koh Phra Thong. On the island, the resort is an eco resort. There is electricity and a fan, but no air conditioning. It reduces carbon production. At night, it is cool and comfortable. My friend said that when she was taking a shower, she saw a deer coming to the back of the house! Yes, this island still has wild animals walking all over the island, especially deer. In the early morning, we planned to watch the sunrise at the savannah grassland and the dwarf celandine forest. However, due to the time of the diving plan, we did not have much time to stay in this grassland. If we have time on the next trip, we will definitely stay longer. Oh! If you want to go to the grassland, contact the accommodation. But on the next trip, I will book a car to go and see it to my heart's content.
Day 2, Koh Phra Thong. This spot has no name. I will name it myself. 555 Pratong Pinnacle
This spot is 22 meters deep. The top of the pile is 14 meters. It is a medium-sized pile of rocks. There are soft corals all around. There are some sea fans. You can dive for about 50 minutes per round. But I did not explore every nook and cranny. There are many nooks and crannies. There is a dive that looks like it could go deeper, up to 30 meters. There are lots of schools of fish, including elephantfish. But I thought there might be some whale sharks circling around. It is a cool spot. But we went down for less than a minute. The thermos blew. I was a bit disappointed. It was cold, so the water was not clear. But when I checked and took some pictures to share with you.
Dive 5, I planned to go on a sunken ship, but the air compressor was broken. It was a pity. This trip, I did not go on the sunken ship. But next trip, I will come again. I will bring four spare tanks from home. 555 In conclusion, the sunken ship is still a legend that I have to come back to do next time.
Things to know before diving at Koh Phra Thong
- This island is not very convenient. All the resorts are eco-resorts. There is no air conditioning. Electricity is not available for a long time. But if you like something raw and close to nature, I recommend it.
- Most of the tourists on the island are foreigners. It is quite peaceful. I recommend not having a party because most tourists like peace and quiet.
- The island is quite difficult to travel to. For the next trip, I will plan for the diver to go to Koh Phra Thong in Kura Buri. And still using the boat from Koh Khao as before
- The diving boat is not big, can accommodate up to 6 people without being cramped. There is a small bathroom on the boat. There is a donkey attached to the boat.
- The diving spot is a local fishing area. Divers must help each other use the area together. Be considerate.
- Recommended to dive during the waning moon period 9-13, which is the best time. #Koh Phra Thong #Diving
