One of the highlights of this visit was the uniquely delightful experience of enjoying an afternoon tea set up as a camping activity right by the river.
The journey to 甲根坝 was as peaceful as it was scenic, winding through verdant landscapes that promised adventure and tranquility. Upon arrival, the vast expanse of green, coupled with the gently flowing river, set the perfect stage for a relaxing afternoon. The setup for our afternoon tea was thoughtfully arranged on the grassy banks, with comfortable seating and a low table laden with a variety of teas and local snacks.
The tranquility of the location was enhanced by the soft sounds of the river’s flow and the gentle rustle of the grass in the breeze. As we sipped on aromatic teas, we enjoyed an assortment of local treats that included both sweet and savory options, each complementing the serene environment. The simplicity of the setup, combined with the natural beauty surrounding us, created a feeling of being at one with nature.
The grasslands around us were vibrant and alive, stretching out under the vast sky. After tea, we took the opportunity to explore the area, walking along the riverbank and through the fields. The peaceful environment was occasionally punctuated by the distant sounds of local wildlife, adding to the sense of being in a remote and untouched part of the world.
As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting golden hues over the landscape, the peacefulness of the setting deepened. We packed up our tea setup and lingered a while longer, not wanting to leave the relaxing embrace of 甲根坝’s natural beauty.
This experience of afternoon tea camping by the river at 甲根坝 was not just a meal, but a moment of connection with the environment, providing a profound sense of relaxation and a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We randomly chose a yak meat mushroom soup pot (Niu Yi Pot Western Sichuan Specialty Mushroom Soup Pot), and it was so delicious! I still miss it after coming back... The soup was fresh and the meat was tender. The yak meat there is also of good quality. The mushrooms in this season paired with the yak meat soup pot are simply amazing! And they also have a parking lot, which is very convenient for parking!
⚠️Precautions
July and August are the rainy season in western Sichuan, so be sure to check the weather forecast before traveling. In plateau areas, if you feel unwell or have altitude sickness, stop and rest before continuing. Be sure to bring warm clothes to keep warm and avoid catching a cold, and also bring oxygen bottles just in case.

Suitable for self-driving or chartered car, as there is no public transportation locally, self-driving is the most convenient way. Departing from Chengdu, passing through Ya'an, Luding, Kangding, Xinduqiao, and finally reaching Jiagenba, the whole journey is about 400 kilometers and takes 7-10 hours. The last section of the road is unpaved and quite rugged and steep, it is recommended to choose someone with rich driving experience to drive, and also ensure that the vehicle is in good condition;

Crossing the snowy world of the 318 Zheduo Mountain
Zheduo Mountain is located in Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province, with the highest peak at 4962 meters above sea level and the pass at 4298 meters above sea level. The altitude difference with Kangding City is up to 1800 meters. It is the first high mountain pass to be crossed on the Sichuan-Tibet line, hence it is known as the 'first pass of Kangba'.
Zheduo Mountain is not only the watershed of the Dadu River and Yalong River basins, but also the boundary of Han-Tibetan culture. Once you cross Zheduo Mountain, you officially enter the Kangba Tibetan area.
'Zheduo' in Tibetan means 'curved', which is translated into Chinese as the two characters 'Zheduo'. The mountain road of Zheduo Mountain is indeed winding, winding back and forth like the character 'Duo', turning one bend after another, no wonder the locals have a saying: 'Erlang Mountain that scares people to death, Zheduo Mountain that turns people to death'.
This time I crossed Zheduo Mountain and successfully checked in at the 4296-meter-high pass platform without any altitude sickness, I'm really happy! After crossing Zheduo Mountain, I feel one step closer to my dream of Tibet!
Hiking in Western Sichuan - Quanhuatan, the Palette of God
Quanhuatan, at an altitude of about 4000 meters, is located in the alpine valley meadow landscape. Its southeast side is the magnificent Gongga Mountain, therefore, admiring this mountain, known as the King of Shu Mountains, from Quanhuatan is an excellent choice. Quanhuatan is formed by a spring water containing a large amount of chemicals on the surface, stretching over 900 meters long and more than 100 meters wide, forming 8 terraces along the slope. Each terrace has a variety of colorful pools of different sizes and unique shapes. These pools are about 40-70 cm deep, with aquatic plants growing in them, dotted with stone flowers, as if a fairyland has descended to the world.
If you want to tour the road near Quanhuatan (also known as the scrubbing board road), locals have built a parking lot here. Although there is no admission fee, a cleaning fee of 20 yuan per person is charged. In addition, they also provide motorcycle service to take tourists to the attractions (please ask for the cost). For tourists with normal physical strength, it takes about an hour to walk to the third level, with the second level being the most beautiful. The different sizes of calcified pools are like many small mirrors, surrounded by moss, plus the reflection of the sky, presenting a colorful and dreamlike scene. The day I went, the snow was very thick, and we all built a cute snowman together.
Continuing to walk up, the water surface of the third terrace obviously becomes larger, and the algae grow luxuriantly in the water, making people feel as if they are in the plateau marsh wetland. Although you can walk on the stones, if you accidentally step on the algae, your shoes may be scrapped. In this way, the view overlooking Quanhuatan becomes even more spectacular, as if you are in the perspective of a drone, visually more powerful. This reminds me of the classic phrase describing the gorgeous autumn colors: 'God's palette'. Song Dynasty's Temple in Kangding🇨🇳

This is Nanwu Temple one of the temples that you could visit in Kangding. It was originally built in the 11th century during the Song Dynasty. It is located at the foot of a mountain and is a stone structured courtyard. The architecture and design is very detailed which we really enjoyed observing. Inside the temple are monks, when we were there, they are some sort of praying so make sure to be silent and respect the temple and the monks. We couldn't even use our cameras as we weren't entirely sure if it was ok to take photos. Very chill and relaxed temple as you would expect. There are not a lpt of tourists too.

Scenic Monastry: Paoma Mt. Park Kangding 🇨🇳
On your first day in Kangding, I can actually highly suggest that you acclimitize first then hike up to Paoma Mt. Park. This mountain is known as the famous love song mountain in Kangding. It is really nice up there as it will give you a panoramic view of Kangding. A great activity for just a couple of hours just within the city. You don't need to go far to see a scenic view of Kangding.
There are two options on how to get to the top of the mountain. First, you can hike up if you like hiking. Second is take the cable car. If you take thr cable car then it will cost you 50rmb per person.
Once you reach the top, you will then again have to pay 50 rmb as your entrance fee so you can roam around the area. There is also a monastry up there where you can enter freely.

Mugecuo Lake Scenic Area, Kangding 🇨🇳
What a stunning sight to behold. After an hour drive from Kangding center to its entrance and another 30 minutes bus ride to the top we reached one of Kangding's treasue - The Mugecuo Lake. It sits in an altitude of almost 4000m above sea level so coming here was a bit of a struggle for me especially when we reached the top.
Getting There - I suggest to speak to your hostel/hotel to book you a car to the entrace of Mugecuo lake. No worries because, you will be booked for a return journey so you don't have to book another car that will take you back to your hotel. For the round trip cost, you will oay around 159-200.
Entrance Fee+Bus ride : 200 per person
‼️TIPS and Warnings
1. DO not come to this place on the same day or the next day upon arrival in Kangding. Acclimitize yourself first in the city then head up. If you're under the weather like me and you don't exercise then the altitude sickness will really strike you. If you're healthy then probably you will be ok. Just listen to your body.
2. Headache, dizziness, fast heartbeat and wanting to puke are signs of altitude sickness
3. Purchase an oxygen bottle
Despite my awful altitude sickness, I still appreciate the beauty that Mugecuo Lake possesses.

Mugecuo Scenic Area (木格措)
Location: Kangding Mugecuo - First stop of my road trip from Chengdu (290km away) - 3778m asl, in the north of Kangding County, also known as Kangding Love Song Scenic Area. As a main attraction within Mount Gongga, the whole site occupies an area of about 300 sqkm, integrating pristine landscape. Mugecuo Lake 3700m is a large plateau lake, the water surface covers about 3 sqkm. The lake is surrounded by pines, cedars, and rhododendron trees on three sides. Connecting Wild Man Lake, Rhododendron Valley is a gorgeous belt traversing the scenic area. More than 68 kinds of rhododendrons are growing here. Continuing downward Yaochi Feiquan, the amazing boiling springs with medical effects, containing lots of trace elements beneficial to health. About 3000m far from the boiling springs, there is the Seven-Color Lake, also a plateau lake. The tones of the lake vary among seven colors according to weather conditions, hence its name. How to visit: there are shuttle busses inside the scenic area, I took the bus till the top and than walked down, it takes one full day if you enjoy every place.
