The last gun village in China
Went for a few hours to this very old village. The view was amazing from the village. Very clear skies and green mountains. This is a great place to visit if you are interested in diving deep into ancient Chinese lifestyles. There are performances through out the day last one starting at 15:00. They have the last gun man tribe. #summervacation #ancienttowns
Kaili
Kaili is home to one of the biggest ethnic Miao villages in China and, thankfully, it’s very accessible to visit.
A bus ride from the city centre, the ethnic village is located between the hills so there’s plenty of opportunities to get an aerial perspective.
Historic on the outside but still nice on the inside, many of the buildings have been converted for the tourist flock - whether it be bougie hotels, nice cafes or decent places to stop and get some snacks the visit should be fairly easy.
As with all of Guizhou, getting off the beaten track and exploring how deep into the alleyways you can get is always the best way forward.

Do you dare to try the high mountains of the Miao? The idiom "mountain flowing water" comes from "Lie Zi Tang Wen", which is like a confidant or a companion, but also a beautiful music. In the Miao family, all visitors are guests, but when there are VIPs arriving at home, Miao will receive the highest courtesy and toast to the guests. This way of toasting is called mountain flow.
At the Miao long table feast, the guests ate half, the Miao Amei will toast and Zhu Xing, the wine glass is holding, the song is ringing, "You like to drink, do not like to drink, do you like it? Like, but also drink!" These pictures have already shown the meaning of "mountain flowing water".
The wine bowl is delivered to the mouth. The guest can't touch the wine bowl with his hands. He is fed by the Miao girl. If the guest touches the wine bowl, it is considered to be a violation of the rules. Drink it, then come back to the second bowl. The Miao family thinks that a big bowl of drinking and a large piece of meat can have a good body to protect the Miao Amei, "mountain flow" is also a test of time, so you are bold enough to come!
There are more than 2,100 people in the Lisha people, which is a branch of the black scorpion. It is said to be the descendant of the third son of Chiyou. Their ancestors fled to settle here, and the hardships and beliefs made them unique. The people of Zhangsha worship the forest and think that the soul of the ancestors is attached to the tree. As a result, rare species that have grown for hundreds of years can be found everywhere in the village. In order to protect the forest, the ancestors set the rules, and the man had to keep a long hair on his head. The Shasha man loves to arm, and he will bring a waist knife and a shotgun when he goes out. In order to respect their customs, the relevant departments approved a special approval to allow each of the sands men to have a shotgun. But how many mysterious stories are there in the sands, no one can make it clear...
Men carry seven pieces of equipment: firearms, wine cellars, machete, pipe, gunpowder gourd, purse, flower bag, After pondering, this equipment can be regarded as just having softness. The flower bag is probably sent by the sweetheart, and the combination of embroidery and dyeing is quite fine. The gun was squatting on the shoulder, the flower bag was slanting back, and the other equipment of the wine cellar machete was neatly hung on the waistband of the belt; wearing a black high-waisted coat with a rounded copper buckle on the left and right, a large trousers with straight legs, and a pair of big feet; Resolute and generous, holding the vertebrae on the top of his head, wrapped around a strip of headscarf, and escaped from a Warring States warrior.

Kaili Xiaogaoshan! A stunning spot to watch the sunrise and sunset.
🚕 Taxi: You can set the destination to the courtyard at the top of the mountain. After the driver accepts the order, you can negotiate whether you can go to the top of the mountain. In other words, after arriving at the courtyard at the top of the mountain, you can continue to drive and charge until you reach the top of the mountain. The same operation applies when going down the mountain.
🚗 Self-driving: There is only one road to the top of the mountain. You can set the destination to Xiaogaoshan Tianye Muxu. After arriving here, continue to follow the main road uphill until you reach the top of the mountain. You're there! This method is recommended!
🏞️ Scenery: Overlooking Kaili, the sunrise, sunset, and night view are all stunning.
📸 Photo spots: The stalls are set up on the top of the mountain. This section of the roadside is an excellent photo spot. There are two corners (especially where there are turning mirrors), where you can take photos with the city. There are specific maps for sunrise and sunset photo spots in other notes.
🌟 Tips:
Bring enough water and some snacks in case of hypoglycemia.
There are barbecue, cold noodles, cold powder, coffee, milk tea, and drinks on the top of the mountain. There are not many people when the weather is bad or the time is too early or too late. There are a lot of people when the weather is good. Please consider the price.
There are some mosquitoes on the road. Take precautions and try not to step on the grass. If you have to go, pay attention to use a stick to explore the road first. I have seen two small spicy strips here.
Pay attention to sun protection.
When the weather is good, there is a high probability of traffic jams after work and there is no place to park. You can park near the top of the mountain and walk up.
Guizhou Primitive Miao Village.
Departure and arrival:
- Departing from Kaili City. If you are driving, you can navigate to Jidao Miao Village. There is a parking lot near the village. If you choose public transportation, you can take a bus from Kaili Passenger Station to Leishan. Get off at Jidao. The journey takes about 40 minutes.

The mountains and water are interdependent, creating a beautiful landscape. The entire village is simple and primitive, without too much commercialization. It allows you to experience a rare sense of peace and tranquility.
- Stroll through the ancient alleys: Walk into the village along the ancient stone-paved road. These stone-paved roads are the crystallization of the wisdom of the Miao people. After years of baptism, they are smooth and shiny. Along the road are wooden stilted houses, standing side by side, built on the mountainside, staggered and full of ethnic characteristics.
Scenic spots:
- Hundred-year-old ancient road: Stepping on the hundred-year-old ancient road, you can seem to see the diligence of the Miao people. - Hundred-year-old ancient trees: There are three hundred-year-old ancient trees in the village, which require a short walk to reach. The ancient trees are thick and tall, requiring three people to hug them. From a distance, they look like a huge umbrella, adding a touch of simplicity and mystery to the Miao village.

The patterns on their clothes are different, containing rich cultural connotations. If you are interested, you can ask them about the clothing's production process and cultural implications.

It tastes sour and spicy, and the fish is fresh and tender. In addition, there are traditional delicacies such as pickled fish, pickled meat, and glutinous rice.

🌈 This summer, let's escape the hustle and bustle and embark on a tranquil journey with Xiashi Ancient Town.
Xiasi Ancient Town is a bustling commercial hub, truly deserving the title of 'Little Shanghai of Guizhou
'
Ten thousand influencers checked in at Qiandongnan. Our journey lasted five days, during which we visited Congjiang, Liping, Zhenyuan, Leishan, Danzhai, Kaili, and Shibing, exploring one place each day. We toured the most beautiful ancient city in China—Zhenyuan Ancient City, the largest Dong village in the country—Zhaoxing Dong Village, and the largest Miao village in the country—Qianhu Miao Village. We went drifting in Shibing, experienced intangible cultural heritage in Danzhai, drank high mountain flowing water in Leishan, and felt the Dragon God marrying off his sister in Liping. The itinerary was very exciting, and the last stop of the activities was Xiasi Ancient Town in Kaili.
Xiasi Ancient Town, a town with a history of over six hundred years, lies quietly upstream of the Qingshui River, like an old man who has experienced the vicissitudes of life, telling stories of past prosperity and changes. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was an important port on the Qingshui River, bustling with merchants and earning the nickname 'Little Shanghai.' It was also known as the 'Pearl on the Qingshui River.' Today, although time has passed, the charm of the ancient town remains, with beautiful mountains and rivers and talented people. It is known as the hometown of Chinese red garlic, zinc-selenium rice, and the world-famous Xiasi dog.
The development of the ancient town benefited from the dredging of the river during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty and multiple renovations during the Qianlong period, which made the waterways smooth. Xiasi gradually became a water port and a distribution center for goods. In the 13th year of Jiaqing, the ancient town was opened as a commercial port, and the commercial circulation industry developed unprecedentedly. Merchants from Guiyang, Anshun, Xingyi, as well as from Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Fujian, settled in the town. The town was filled with guild halls and numerous shops, with hundreds of merchant ships, and the lights reflecting in the river were as bright as stars.
Walking into the ancient town is like entering a melting pot of diverse cultures. The stilted buildings of the Miao people, the drum towers of the Dong people, and the Western-style ancient churches all tell different stories. When we arrived, there was an immersive performance taking place in the ancient town, making us feel as if we had traveled back to the Qing Dynasty. The bustling port, the busy streets, and the classical and beautiful performances made us feel the prosperity of the ancient town.
In the ancient town, there are many old buildings, among which the Yu Wang Palace is a representative. It enshrines Yu the Great and is a place where people pray for good weather. The Yangming Academy, founded by students of Wang Yangming, is said to have been a place where Wang Yangming himself taught. Inside the academy, a large stone is engraved with the Yangming philosophy of 'the mind is principle, knowledge and action are one,' giving a deeper understanding of this legendary historical figure.
When you come to Xiasi, the local cuisine is not to be missed. Especially the sour soup fish, which is not only one of the four famous dishes of Qiandongnan but also an intangible cultural heritage. Its unique flavor is unforgettable. It uses wild fish from the Qingshui River, paired with rice acid or chili acid, and added with ginger, garlic, and tomatoes. It is a dish with excellent color, aroma, and taste, with tender meat and a fresh and appetizing soup, making it a rare delicacy.
The five-day trip to Qiandongnan allowed me to deeply appreciate the richness and diversity of this land. Xiasi Ancient Town, with its profound historical and cultural heritage, unique natural scenery, diverse architectural styles, and rich cuisine, has become the most beautiful memory in my heart. Here, I not only saw the accumulation of history but also felt the integration of cultures. It is a place that makes people reluctant to leave.
The family day trip organized by Kaili Lelie Homestay was wonderfully niche
Staying in Kaili, I originally planned to stay for one night before catching the high-speed train, but who knew I'd discover their one-day niche light hiking route~
Although a bit pricey, it was a private group tour, and no one else joined that day, so it was just our family setting off.
Hiking into the mountains, everything was green and pristine, and then we heard the thunderous sound of a waterfall. After walking for just over 10 minutes, we arrived, and the waterfall was massive.
We also had a barbecue, but unfortunately, it rained, otherwise we could have played on paddleboards or taken a boat ride.
I have some regrets; I should have paid a little extra for a travel photographer.
I heard that two families who signed up were offered a complimentary travel photography session, I'll come back next time to try other small group activities.🤗🤗🤗

Le Li Homestay, a homestay that makes me linger!
Every corner is exquisite, and any random shot is photogenic!
It's apparent that the owner is a person of great taste, from the overall design of the homestay to the fresh flowers in the lobby, the coffee shop, the chairs in the corners, and the aromatherapy, all exuding sophistication.
The facilities in the room are also very complete, stylishly furnished, and equipped with a washing machine, dryer, and even thoughtfully prepared non-woven bags. Awesome!
The homestay is just five minutes from the high-speed train station, very close and convenient. Just a short walk away is a food street, which foodies will absolutely love. Most importantly, the hustle and bustle of the food festival doesn't affect my rest, which is delightful.
The service is also superb! After checking in, they will send us local food recommendations, as well as suggestions for nearby attractions. For a lazy traveler like me, this is incredibly considerate. The butler can also give us advice and help plan our trip, wow, amazing! And they offer free high-speed train transfers! So thoughtful!
And the breakfast is also rich, with fresh fruit, freshly cooked noodles, free-range chicken porridge, milk, soy milk, and homemade dried radishes, which are perfect with the porridge!
When I visited during the Dragon Boat Festival, there were also local specialty zongzi. At that moment, I felt the festive atmosphere! Really, I could cry!
Oh, and there's afternoon tea too, the cakes are delicious and well-presented! Very exquisite! They also gave us a goodnight dessert, which was freshly made, and having a bowl of cool mung bean soup in the summer is just too blissful. After a day out, coming back to a bowl of cool mung bean soup before sleeping is so comfortable!
I came alone, and the ladies were very enthusiastic, I didn't feel awkward at all, it was very comfortable to be around them.
In a nutshell, coming here is a win! Everyone, go for it!

With a history of over 600 years, it is known as the 'Hometown of World-Famous Dogs', 'Hometown of Chinese Dragon Boat Champions', and has been reputed as 'Little Shanghai'.
I prefer the quiet decay over the bustling scene.
I have a special fondness for the pristine state of Xiaosi Ancient Town.
Beyond the years eloquently narrated by the natural landscape and the context of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups' habitats,
The flowing streams reflect the mottled and fragmented days, timeless and without beginning or end.
Kaili | Guizhou
Everyone wants to visit Guiyang but Kaili is a city that also deserves to be in your Guizhou list!
In Kaili, you can still get an insight in the culture and customs of the local minorities. Sadly, this might all disappear in the next 20-30 years as it is developing and growing.
Find the big local market, walk through its winding alleys and get yourself local hand made crafts. You can get buy some beautiful handmade clothes, handicrafts and also some fresh produce.

Instead of Xijiang, I recommend a more niche secret spot for the May Day holiday
Wow! Compared to the bustling Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, my bestie recommended an amazing place for the May Day holiday—Guizhou's Xiaosi Ancient Town! This place has few people but beautiful scenery, it's like a hidden treasure waiting for you to explore!
Xiaosi Ancient Town is located 28 kilometers southwest of Kaili City in the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province, and it's also over 180 kilometers from Guiyang. Whether you're driving yourself or chartering a car, it's super convenient! Plus, the entrance is free, but you'll need to pay 20 yuan each for the Yangming Academy and Yuwang Palace experience tickets.
This little-known ancient town of a thousand years is like a dazzling pearl on the banks of the Qingshui River! It hasn't been 'polluted' by excessive commercialization, and still retains the super simple enthusiasm of the local people and a deep historical heritage! There are so many characteristic attractions here, like the Lusheng Square, Drum Tower, Opera Stage, Ancient Wharf, and the unique traditional stilted buildings. Each spot tells the story of the ancient town, it's simply enchanting!
And, and, the Xiaosi dogs are super cute too! They look silly and well-behaved, but they are actually the only breed recognized as a world-class hunting dog in our country! But everyone should be careful, Xiaosi dogs are a bit cautious, so don't just go touching them! The intangible cultural heritage here is also very rich, with traditional paper-cutting, batik skills, and handmade noodle making, all super interesting!
Hehe, although there aren't many tourists here during the May Day holiday, everyone should still book tickets and accommodation in advance, don't wait until the last minute! When touring the ancient town, remember to protect the cultural relics and historic sites, don't touch or damage them! When experiencing the ethnic culture, respect the local customs and be a polite tourist! Also, remember to protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes, bring the necessary travel supplies, so you can have fun!
For the May Day holiday, don't go to Xijiang where it's crowded, come to Xiaosi Ancient Town to enjoy this tranquility and beauty! Come check out my homepage for more exciting travel routes waiting for you to discover!
