One of the lowest point streams in the world
Wadi Mujib is a magnificent natural canyon located in western Jordan. It is considered the lowest canyon in the world. Its depth is approximately 400 meters below sea level and it flows into the Dead Sea, which itself lies at a resting depth of 430 meters.
The first sight is the towering rock walls on both sides, accentuated by deep reds, oranges, and browns. The lines carved by water and wind over thousands of years have left patterns on the rocks, like a page of history written by nature, not ink on paper.
The river that flows through Wadi Mujib ebbs and flows with the seasons. In summer, the water level gradually drops, making it accessible for wading. However, by late October, the route is closed for safety reasons, as the monsoon and floodwaters from the Moab Plateau can become uncontrollable.
Beyond its natural beauty, Wadi Mujib also possesses significant ecological significance. This area is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is home to mountain goats, rare birds, and native plants adapted to the harsh environment.
• Wadi Mujib is known as the "lowest canyon or gorge in the world" because its entrance opens into the Dead Sea at an elevation of approximately -430 meters above sea level.
• However, the stream within Wadi Mujib itself, the Mujib River, actually flows from the Moab Plateau into the Dead Sea, making it one of the lowest rivers in the world.
