Inuyama Castle: One of the Twelve Original Castles
Inuyama Castle, a National Treasure, was built in 1537 during the Muromachi period by Oda Nobunaga's uncle, Nobuyasu. The castle keep is the oldest existing one in Japan. Located at the strategic point of the Nōbi Plain, the view from the top floor of the keep is truly breathtaking. The surrounding area features many tourist attractions, including the Kiso River, the old streets of Inuyama Castle Town, and Meiji Mura. Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu each controlled Inuyama Castle at different times, paving their way to becoming rulers of Japan.
No reservation needed! For a visit to the National Treasure Inuyama Castle and a food tour in the castle town, the 'Inuyama Castle Town Ticket' is a great deal when you take the Meitetsu train.
Inuyama Castle in Aichi Prefecture
Inuyama Castle is indeed a valuable example of Japanese castle architecture from the Sengoku period. Its main structure is primarily built from wood and stone, showcasing the sophistication of traditional Japanese construction techniques.
The use of wood in the castle's design, typical of Japanese castles, allowed for intricate craftsmanship, flexibility, and resistance to earthquakes, while the stone foundations provided a solid base for defense and structural stability. Inuyama Castle's preservation over the centuries, including its wooden interior, original layout, and historical details, makes it an essential reference for understanding the military, cultural, and aesthetic aspects of Japan's feudal castles.

Japanese Hakutei Castle? Come to Inuyama Castle to experience the poetic charm
❤Recommended Reason:
It is said that the Japanese Confucian scholar Ogyū Sorai from the Edo period was inspired by the poem 'Early Departure from Baidi City' by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai. Geographically, China's Baidi City is located along the Yangtze River, while Inuyama Castle is near the famous Kiso River in Japan. Here, you can find both Chinese and Japanese versions of 'Early Departure from Baidi City'. When you stand at the top and overlook the entire city, you can feel the high terrain described in the first line, 'Amidst the colorful clouds'.
Inuyama Castle's main keep has been preserved since the Japanese Warring States period and was designated as a national treasure in 1935 under Japan's National Treasure Preservation Law (the other three are Matsumoto Castle, Hikone Castle, and Himeji Castle).
📝Tips:
Highly recommend buying the Inuyama Castle package ticket at Nagoya Station for 1680 yen. It also includes a map of Inuyama Castle and a coupon guide. The package includes:
Round-trip train ticket from Meitetsu Nagoya to Inuyama Castle;
Inuyama Castle admission voucher (remember to exchange it for a ticket at the entrance ticket office);
Inuyama Castle Town discount coupons (some designated meals have discounts, the discount varies, generally following the order in the coupon guide);
A coupon for the Japanese garden Urakuen, which we didn't visit.
🗓Itinerary:
No backtracking: Get off at Inuyama Yūen Station--(walk 1.3km) Sanko Inari Shrine--Inuyama Castle--Inuyama Castle Town--return to Inuyama Station
After finishing the tour of Inuyama Castle, return to Sanko Inari Shrine at the entrance, cross the road to Inuyama Castle Town.
✅Travel Tips:
You need to take off your shoes to enter the main keep, and a plastic bag will be provided at the entrance to store your shoes. The most interesting part is that the stairs to each floor are quite steep; I used both hands and feet to climb. Going up is fine, but coming down is a bit harder, so walk slowly sideways. Fortunately, there aren't many people in the scenic area, otherwise, each floor would be crowded.
The second floor is the armory, and the top floor has some introductions to the castle lord and history, with corridors and railings around to overlook the entire city. The castle lord was the Naruse family, with portraits of the first seven lords and photos starting from the eighth, but no tenure times. I guess they might just be honorary titles later on.
If you have enough time, Meiji Mura is also worth a visit, but you need to take a bus from the JR station. If you just want to enjoy a quiet town, a walk along the Kiso River is already very pleasant.

very beautiful and spacious Japanese garden
A very nice place with a very helpful staff. It is incredibly beautiful and full of tea houses all things pertaining to a traditional Japanese garden.
A beautiful traditional garden. There is an admission fee, and with a slightly higher price there is a matcha tea set available.
highly recommended for visitors who can feel Wabi Sabi, Japanese traditional beauty.

Very serene and enchanting
It has a cery nice design and color located just near the river which is the boundary of Aichi and Gifu prefecture. The entrance is just ¥550 for adults and you can also get inside of it and see the nice view on the top.
The structural form of this castle is with watchtower. Do note you have to take your shoes off inside the castle and there are several sets of steep steps to get to the top.
It was also pretty hot inside on the day we went. The view on top had the best view

A European-style Nagoya.
Looking for some outdoor places to stroll around, and not wanting to join a local day tour, I chose to visit Meiji Mura. It's not too convenient from the city center, so I took the Nagoya Meitetsu to Inuyama, then transferred to a bus to Meiji Mura. At Kanayama and Nagoya stations, you can buy a Meiji Mura package ticket, which includes a round-trip ticket from Nagoya Meitetsu to Meiji Mura, an admission ticket, and a one-day pass for the steam train and tram inside the park. It's cheaper than buying separately. I spent over five hours in the park, and many of the buildings are of European style. It's a great place for a photo op in Nagoya.
Soak in the festives at Inuyama Festival
Inuyama Festival is celebrated once a year as an offering to Haritsuna Jinja Shrine. Happens on the 1st Sunday of every April, the Inuyama Festival comprises the parade of 13 enormous floats that proceeds along with the melodies of flute and drums. 365 lanterns are adorned by the floats and will be lighten up when night comes.
Aside from the parade of floats, do look out for pop-up stalls that sells with many local delicacies. As this Festival do attracts many locals and tourists, do join them early.

A Complete Guide to a Day Trip to Inuyama Castle, Originally Known as 'Baidicheng'
If you find Nagoya a bit boring when visiting central Japan, consider setting aside a day for Inuyama Castle. It's a leisurely visit, and four to five hours should suffice. You'll also have time to check out the popular online spot of the sunglass-wearing Hotei Buddha.
❤️ Must-Visit
🎏【Inuyama Castle】
As one of Japan's five national treasure castles, Inuyama Castle is not to be missed!
Originally named Baidicheng, Inuyama Castle takes its name from Li Bai's poem 'Departing Baidi in the Morning Amongst Colored Clouds'. Compared to the Three Gorges, the landscape here is much more delicate, but the view is still among the best of Japan's many castles. Especially worth visiting is the top floor of the castle tower, where the landscape interspersed with mountains and water is truly worthwhile.
🍵【Yūrakuen | Jo-an Teahouse】
A solitary trip to Inuyama, with the scent of grass and moss drifting in the light rain. Enjoying tea in the national treasure-level teahouse Yūrakuen inside the Indigo Hotel is very pleasant.
🎎【Yama-guruma Pavilion】
You can see four festival floats. During the first weekend of April, there's the Inuyama Festival where 13 floats parade through the area.
🥢 Must-Eat
There are many places to eat and drink in the castle town, and you can have lunch or afternoon tea here
🥩【Nikuhei】
Just buy a 'missile beef' two-course meal, which includes a serving of raw beef sushi and a serving of grilled beef rolls.
🍡【Hontō Charyō】
When you're tired from walking, it's a good place to sit down for tea. Seven different flavors of skewers with matcha.
🧁【cocotomo farm】
If you like coffee desserts, don't miss this shop
🪭 Tour Route
There are three options for departing from Nagoya, take the Meitetsu Limited Express from Nagoya Station towards 【Shin-Tagami】
🚞 Get off at Inuyama Station, return from Inuyama-guchi Station
🚞 Get off at Inuyama-yūen Station, return from Inuyama Station
🚞 Board and alight at Inuyama Station
For this trip, to visit the national treasure teahouse in the Indigo Hotel, I chose the second route. It felt a bit boring after getting off, so it's probably better to get off at Inuyama Station.
Half a day is enough to enjoy Inuyama. Depart from Nagoya after ten in the morning, return in the evening, and even have time to take photos of the Hotei Buddha.
1️⃣ After getting off at Inuyama-yūen Station, first visit the 【National Treasure Teahouse Yūrakuen】 inside Indigo for photos and tea, or go to 【Meiji Village】 for a visit
2️⃣ Go up the hill to visit Inuyama Castle. On weekdays, there's basically no queue to enter the castle tower. But try to avoid weekends, as you may need to queue to enter Inuyama Castle.
3️⃣ After leaving Inuyama Castle, you can visit 【Haritsuna Shrine】 for safe childbirth, 【Sanko Inari Shrine】 for marriage and fortune, and 【Sarutahiko Shrine】 for traffic safety and business prosperity
4️⃣ Then, search for food along the castle town of Inuyama, or rent a kimono for a costume change. The 【Yama-guruma Pavilion】 is also a spot worth visiting
5️⃣ Finally, take the train back to Nagoya from 【Inuyama Station】
6️⃣ If there's time on the way back, you can stop by to visit the popular online spot of the Hotei Buddha (picture 10) to see what the Buddha looks like without sunglasses
Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden, an IHG Hotel
#japantrip
Truly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen garden! This hotel has a lot of wow factors. From the spectacular view, very well maintained (spotless clean) room, to the friendly staff. The onsen was great, free access to the tea garden was definitely a highlight! The breakfast was not very impressed tbh, but good enough. We are very happy with the stay and will come back again if we got a chance. Highly recommended!overall ok
Meiji
Great place to visit if you come to Tokyo
This museum so great I like it #Japan
Tokyo Shinjuku Tokyo metropolitan Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden, an IHG H
#japantrip
Finally a Great IHG indigo property which is rare in Japan rather than those 1980s Crowne Plazas.
Fantastic room and garden as well as Onsen.
Great recognition of my Diamond elite.
Staffs are super friendly, just that the standard of English needs to be improved.Restaurant is offering decent semi-buffet.I would preferred them to offer kaiseiki style set menu instead.overall awesome
Inuyama a must visit area in Nagoya!
#nagoyatrip Planning your trip to Japan in coming May? Do make Inuyama on your list as it is one of only twelve " "}original castles" "} left in Japan. Nagoya has got many ancient castles and this is definitely one you got visit!
Area around Inuyama is filled with old Japanese culture and not to forgot the delicious food street! The shrine at the bottom area of Inuyama has got many Tori gates that you can take similar photo as that you would get in Kyoto!
From the top of the castle you get to see the Kiso River! This amazing view is defining! What’s more is that every summer, the thousand years practice of Ukai Cormorant Fishing will be performed here and do put it on your list!
From Inuyama Station and walk about 15 minutes along Kiso River path you’ll get to Inuyama! #Nagoya #Japan #Inuyama ##Castle ##Ancient ##Culture
Recommended time spend: 5 hours
Educational Cultural Museum
#nagoyatrip Be sure to schedule a full day to enjoy what this place has to offer. Bring snacks too - while there are cafes and vending machines throughout the area, it'll be easier to relax and secure your seat since there are a lot of people exploring. Especially during the weekends!
I suggest to start off with the farthest site- Frank Lloyd Wright's work on the Imperial Hotel. There's a cafe inside and lots of areas to explore. From there, one can spend about 10-12p minutes per site - some would have informative tours so keep your eyes peeled for their schedules!
This place isn't that friendly for wheelchair access - the toilets are far too narrow but at least they are spread along the area for people to be comfortable.
Some sites are properly cared for while some have been haphazardly painted for aesthetic reasons. Still, enjoy exploring the sites authentic place ha s a lot to offer.
Little World in Nagoya
#nagoyatrip A good place for day out with loving ones.
Pets also allowed. There are various kinds of restaurants of various countries. As long as its name Little world, you can see only few countries here. I think they missed some world famous civilizations and countries.
However, you can enjoy taking pictures around the area.
Some places are just like a park and gardens but it’s nicely built place. Houses of various countries are made in a planned way. Very informative with respective design and native touch/feel.
Japan Monkey Park
#thingstodo Many rides here are of types where kids can enjoy . No waiting time so we can enjoy as many rides as possible in a small time. We have option of taking either one day pass or entry ticket and ride tickets separately. It is better to buy one day pass for kids and normal entry pass for adults. But if you have kids younger than 6 years then one adult can buy a day pass. There is also play area inside and a maze park as well .
Inuyama Castle
#thingstodo Nice place to stop en route Kyoto. There is a shrine at the entrance, and the castle is right behind on a small hill. My first visit to a Japanese castle, very unique. The stair case inside the castle is very steep to reach every floor and I wonder how folks back then climbed up/down 🥲 Gorgeous view from the 3rd floor of the town around.
There is a post town type Street opposite the castle.. To shop, drink and rent a kimono or just take photos. Nice place!
Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden
#2024wish
One of the best Hotel Indigo hotels in the world for sure. Rooms and reception were beautiful with great views of Inuyama Castle, garden and the river. Staff were so polite and welcoming. Onsen and gym were very modern with great equipment. The moment you walk in it is a chilled and relaxing place to be. Photos do not do it justice, highly recommended.overall it awesome
Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden
#hotelreview
A very luxury, modern, nice room. One of the top three in Nagoya. The location is not in the heart of city center, but you can easily to access if u ride with a car.
The hotel has a rule they don't allow guest to wear japanese kimono (they provided) walk to the lobby area, we got warned in the afternoon. But we still saw people wear the kimono and seated in the bar at the lobby. It's double standard. And another thing their service has some problem is when we check in, everything just very smooth.overall this hotel awesome
Appreciate the elegant aesthetics of Kanazawa, as graceful as gold foil and as rich as powdered snow
🌸 When the cherry blossoms in Kenrokuen Garden bloom beautifully, when the riverside lights of Asano River are lit, the whole city is filled with a romantic atmosphere. 🎐 The cherry blossoms in Kanazawa are also fleeting but extremely brilliant representatives of Japanese aesthetics, with rich craft experiences and humanistic arts intertwined, everyone is expressing their understanding of 'beauty' in a unique way.

Inuyama Castle at Nagoya
#fallishere
Inuyama Castle is located about an hour away from Nagoya and in the castle town, visitors can enjoy eating out, renting kimonos, and going down the river on a sightseeing boat.
Note that the steps within the castle are very steep and not suitable for people with bad knees or legs. There are no handicap options at all.
Uphill slope from bottom area to main entrance is also moderately difficult with cobbles stones steps and path.
The view from the top is breathtaking though. You can see the Kiso River, the city of Inuyama & mountains.
#fallingseason
Getting There - Meitetsu line from Nagoya station
Attractions - Inuyama castle, boat riding etc
Hotels -
Food & Restaurants - there is not any restaurant near by the location but can find near the station
Shopping - some souvenir shops are available
My first ever trip to Japan and I had the opportunity to experience feeding these red little monkeys. Super cute and intelligent, they’d usually wait for tourists to offer them food and hardly snatched anything that wasn’t meant for them.
This was located at either Osaka or Kyoto… can’t really recall for now but will definitely pin the exact location later on when searching!!! #urbanexplorer #summervacation #japan
castle Inuyama with Sakura
it was really amazing trip with my friend !
Another castle that is close to my home is Inuyama Castle. It is fairly accessible from Nagoya Station for only around ¥700. Inuyama Castle, as the name suggests, is located in Inuyama, Aichi. What makes Inuyama Castle special is that, it is still the original castle built during 1440. It has not ever been reconstructed. Entrance fee for the castle is only ¥550.
