I don't recommend visiting Huangshan in May or June.
Here is a Huangshan travel guide:
Pre-trip preparation
• Documents: Bring your ID card and other valid documents.
• Clothing: The temperature on the mountain is low, so bring a jacket, such as a windbreaker, even in summer.
• Equipment: Prepare hiking poles and comfortable sneakers. If you want to watch the sunrise, you can bring a flashlight.
• Supplies: Prepare an appropriate amount of food and water, such as chocolate to replenish energy, as prices on the mountain are relatively high.
Recommended attractions
• Huangshan Scenic Area: A must-see attraction where you can see unique pine trees and oddly shaped rocks, such as the Welcoming Pine, Black Tiger Pine, Monkey Gazing at the Sea, and Dream Flower Pen. Bright Summit, Lotus Peak, and Tiandu Peak are the three main peaks of Huangshan. Bright Summit is suitable for watching the sunrise and sunset, Lotus Peak has magnificent scenery, and Tiandu Peak is precipitous. The West Sea Grand Canyon has beautiful scenery, and you can take a small train to experience it.
• Hongcun Scenic Area: Known as the "Chinese Village in a Painting," South Lake and Moon Pond have picturesque scenery, and the ancient Huizhou-style buildings are well preserved.
• Xidi: An ancient Huizhou-style village with a long history. The Hu Wenguang Archway is a landmark building.
• Tunxi Old Street: You can taste special delicacies such as Mao Tofu and Stinky Mandarin Fish, and buy Huizhou-style souvenirs.
Accommodation options
• Huangshan City: It is recommended to stay near Tunxi Old Street, which is convenient for travel, shopping, and dining.
• Tangkou Town: Close to the South Gate of Huangshan Scenic Area, making it easy to climb the mountain.
• Hongcun: If you want to experience the folk customs of southern Anhui, you can stay in Hongcun. The B&Bs near South Lake Academy have a good environment.
• Huangshan Mountain Top: If you want to watch the sunrise and sunset, you can stay in a hotel on the mountain top, such as Baiyun Hotel and Xihai Hotel, but the prices are relatively high and you need to book in advance.
Transportation guide
• External transportation: You can fly to Huangshan Tunxi International Airport; for high-speed rail, it is recommended to choose Huangshan North Station. After exiting the station, you can take a tourist bus to the South Gate of Huangshan Scenic Area.
• Internal transportation: Within the scenic area, you need to take a transfer bus to the entrance of the mountain. You can also choose a cable car to save energy. There are Yungu Cableway, Yuping Cableway, and Taiping Cableway.
Recommended food
• Huizhou cuisine: Includes Stinky Mandarin Fish, Huangshan Shuangshi (rock frog stewed with rock tripe), and Wenzheng Mountain Bamboo Shoots.
• Snacks: Including Huangshan Shaobing, Ta Guo, Mao Tofu, and Huizhou Wonton.
