Wild Wild North - Inner Mongolia
Definitely a trip for the more adventurous traveler.
Inner Mongolia was an experience and a half. camping in the desert, riding horses, seeing ancient inner Mongolian rituals, and eating ALOT of Lamb.
Two cities to definitely check out would be Baotou and Hohhot. Baotou has a grassland park right in the center of the city and a lot of good hotpot restaurants. Hohhot is a little bigger with a large Muslim population. you can find great halal food in the area and see some Islamic inspired architecture. a lot of dried meats
🐎 Inner Mongolia is known for its horses and if you go visit the many grassland areas you might be able to catch a horse show or even ride one yourself
🍲 The food is amazing. abundant in lamb and milk products, it might be alittle hard to find vegetarian options, but they do exists.
🐫 The grasslands are amazing. you get to sleep in a yurt and see the night sky and all the stars without any glare from city light.
👘 Classical Mongolian Dancing is also a must see. Very well choreographed dance moves combined with balancing objects on their heads, the dancers make it look easy. but it probably took a long time to master. 🙂
Getting There - Plane and rented keep to the grasslands
Attractions - Horse show, Grasslands, Traditional Mongolian Dancing
Hotels - Grassland Yurt
Food & Restaurants - Lamb Hotpot, Milk Tea, Lamb BBQ

In Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, there is a Tibetan Buddhist temple called Dazhao Temple. When you first heard of Dazhao Temple, you will feel a little doubt, just because there is also a Jokhang Temple in Lhasa in the far west. "Call" and "Zhao" have the same pronunciation, but the meaning is different. "Call" is the meaning of Tibetan temples, and "Zhao" is the meaning of "Sakyamuni Buddha". Da Zhao Temple, the Han name was originally "Hongci Temple", later changed to "Woliang Temple", and because the temple is dedicated to a silver Buddha, also known as "Silver Buddha Temple." "Small is hidden in the mountains, and it is hidden in the city." Most of the temples I have seen are in the mountains, and the temple is an exception, located in the city centre of Hohhot. The so-called big hidden
Dazhao Wuliang Temple
Dazhao Temple is a large Tibetan Buddhism monastery in the southern part of Yuquan District, Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China, belonging to the Gelug school (Yellow Sect). The word 'Dazhao' in its name means 'temple' in Tibetan. Originally named 'Hongci Temple', it was later changed to 'Wuliang Temple'. It is also known as 'Silver Buddha Temple' because it houses a silver Buddha statue. Dazhao Temple is the earliest Gelug monastery built in Hohhot and has a wide-ranging influence in the Mongolian region.
It was founded by Altan Khan, the leader of the Tumed Mongol tribe during the Ming Dynasty, in the seventh year of the Wanli era (1579 AD). Completed in 1580, it is the earliest Lamaist monastery built in Hohhot and is also one of the few Mongolian temples without a living Buddha. Because Emperor Kangxi once stayed here for several days, to show respect for the emperor, the monks abolished the reincarnation system for the living Buddha.
Dazhao is not only a Buddhist holy site but also a famous tourist destination known both in China and abroad. The splendid temple architecture, precious cultural relics and artworks, as well as the mysterious Cham dance and Buddhist music, constitute the unique 'Temple Culture' of Dazhao.

Temples and Pagodas
This was a very quick trip before our train ride to Baotou and imagine, we visited these beautiful temples for 30 minutes and it was a lot if fun with so many people. Though we kind of regret that we don't have so much time to explore the traditional street and see what they are selling there but still we love the experience having seen so much beauty. Take note: the five pagoda temple is for free.

Great Mosque Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
Inner Mongolia Tourism | Chinese-style Exotic Charm, Hohhot Great Mosque
The Hohhot Great Mosque is the result of the development and innovation based on traditional Chinese architectural culture. It generally reflects the layout of traditional Chinese temple architecture, but the main buildings are connected by a central axis, and the buildings on both sides are not strictly symmetrical. The arrangement of entering the main gate and then the main hall in an inverted manner shows a flexible and unconstrained layout idea, which is a breakthrough from the traditional method.
The Hohhot Great Mosque faces west from the east and is an independent three-entry courtyard. The temple gate has three bays, with a horizontal plaque reading 'Great Mosque' hanging above. Inside the temple gate, directly opposite is the back wall of the prayer hall. The main entrance of the prayer hall faces east with three arches, and there is a small platform in front of the door. To the south is the storeroom. At the southwest corner of the three-entry courtyard stands the Moon-Viewing Tower.

Hohhot's weather is so nice that a casual snapshot is very healing.
➡️What can you do in Hohhot city area?
This time I didn't go to the grasslands, as the grass hasn't grown in April, so I mainly wandered around the city area for two days~
1⃣️Dazhao Temple: Recommended level🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Pictures 1 to 8
The ticket is 35 per person, we didn't make a reservation and just scanned the code to buy it at the temple entrance~
The temple is very large, with a visiting time of one hour, it has very large Buddha statues and buildings, very characteristic of Mongolia, and the photos look great~
Mongolian portrait photography📷: This time I took one at a photo studio, 299 per person, including makeup and clothes, photography, thirty negatives and eight retouched photos
☑️Photography experience: The service attitude is very good, I am very satisfied with the makeup! I wish I could weld the cloud decoration onto my face haha, the photographer will tell you a lot of movements that suit you👋☑️❤️
2⃣️Baohantan Pagoda: Recommended level🌟🌟🌟🌟

The pagoda is really beautiful when the lights are on at night! There is a pair of eyes on the tower that feels very mysterious, and when I got there, it was already night, after taking photos you can walk around the tower three times to pray for peace~
3⃣️Xilitu Zhao: Recommended level🌟🌟🌟
The ticket is 25 per person, not very cost-effective
There are a lot of pigeons at the entrance that are very photogenic! The temple is relatively small, and you can quickly walk around it, there is also a tower inside that looks very good, when there is sunlight it feels like a golden shining pagoda!

➡️Where can you stay in Hohhot city area?
This time we stayed at the four-star Wan Hao Hotel, four hundred a night, the environment is very good, only ten minutes drive from Hohhot East Station

Ride a shared electric scooter🛵! There are several companies! It can seat two people, highly recommended!
If it's too far, you can take a taxi, it's very convenient and not expensive in Hohhot~
In the end, I want to say! Although there are not many things to play with in Hohhot, there were not many tourists during Qingming, it was not crowded and very quiet, and I also took some nice photos, personally, I am quite satisfied~
China's Dairy Capital, The Green City Beyond the Great Wall (Part IV): The Great Mosque
The Great Mosque, located on Tongdao South Road in Da Bei Street of Hui Min District in Hohhot, the capital city, is a well-preserved ancient building, constructed in the 32nd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1693 AD).
According to the inscriptions on the stele of the mosque's north and south lecture halls, 'Since the establishment of the Great Qing dynasty, it has been built over many years.' Initially, the construction was quite simple, but it was significantly renovated in the 54th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1789 AD).
In 1923, the local Hui people raised funds for another renovation, which led to its current scale. The mosque covers an area of about 4,000 square meters.
After the renovation, the main hall was raised by 1.7 meters, and the total area of the mosque was expanded by several dozen square meters. The mosque faces east to west, with the main entrance in the middle bearing a plaque with the inscription 'The Great Mosque' and the words 'National Peace' and 'People's Safety'.
There was originally a screen wall in front of the temple gate, over one Zhang tall (now demolished). The outer back wall of the main hall faces the main entrance directly.
There are side doors to the south and north of the main entrance, with blue walls on both sides.
Inside the main gate is the main hall—the main building of the temple, with a unique design. The hall door faces east and has three arch-shaped doors. The lintel is engraved with fine Arabic script, and in front of the main hall is a 'moon platform,' which leads into the main hall when ascended.
In addition to the sanctuary, there are also north and south lecture halls, Muslim baths, the Moon-Watching Tower, the Imam's office, the elders' meeting room, the scripture hall, and other buildings.
There is a stele pavilion in the mosque, among which the 'Hongwu Emperor's Inscribed Hundred-Word Stele for the Huihui Religion' and the 'Stele of the Great Mosque's Renovation in Suiyuan' are of significant research value.
The Moon-Watching Tower, the minaret to the southeast of the mosque, was built in 1933. It is 33 meters high, hexagonal in plan, and has a hexagonal spire. It is named for its use during the month of Ramadan to mark the beginning and end of fasting upon sighting the new moon.
The tower has two stories, shaped like bamboo sections, forming a hexagonal body. The west side of the tower is inscribed with the words 'Moon-Watching Tower' in both Chinese and Arabic.

Allah blesses, rectify the mind and cultivate oneself | Hohhot Grand Mosque
🕌️【National Day Seven-Day Joy·Allah Blesses, Rectify the Mind and Cultivate Oneself】There is a mosque complex in Hohhot city that was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. The bright and lively colors are eye-catching. The exquisite arches of the main prayer hall, coupled with Islamic-style decorations, are very beautiful. The Moon-watching Tower built during the Republic of China stands tall. Interestingly, we witnessed a unique Muslim wedding here, solemn and festive. Any faith should be respected, and the blending of various cultures will make this world more colorful.

The Splendid Fusion of Han and Tibetan Styles | Xilitu Zhao in Hohhot
【The Magnificent Blend of Han and Tibetan Architectures】One of the seven great temples in Hohhot—Xilitu Zhao, has gained influence as a Gelug sect Tibetan Buddhism monastery in Hohhot due to the fourth Xilitu's contribution to Emperor Kangxi's quelling of Galdan. Although the monastery is not large, it has many attractions. The grand prayer hall is uniquely adorned with colorful Tibetan architectural elements; the longevity white stupa built during the Qing dynasty is also exquisitely carved; and there are remnants of Ming dynasty murals in the ancient Buddha hall. Compared to the bustling and crowded Dazhao Temple next door, this place is tranquil and peaceful, which is very much appreciated.
Ticket price: 25 yuan

Not crowded, great for photography

Visiting Hohhot, I was deeply moved by the religious ceremony at the Dazhao Wuliang Temple
It's like a paradise on earth!
Hohhot is definitely worth bringing family and friends to check in. It's too beautiful!
When you come to Hohhot, head straight for the two temples across the street.
The Xiaozhao (Xilitu Zhao) is known for its tranquility and exquisiteness, with more Tibetan-style Lama pagodas inside. Entering around 4 pm, I just caught the temple ceremony, which was already very impressive.
The Dazhao (Dazhao Wuliang Temple) is superior as a royal (Kangxi) family temple, with a higher status and larger scale. It houses the largest existing silver Tibetan Buddhist statue and the Thousand-Handed Guanyin statue is also extraordinary. I was equally fortunate to catch the 9:30 am ceremony. Although I couldn't understand the content, the experience was still overwhelming.
Perhaps it's because it's the first time for a Han Chinese person to visit a Tibetan temple, but seeing the richly colored and gorgeous prayer flags, the exquisite and beautiful Thangka paintings, the mysterious texts and symbols, and the devout prostrations of the faithful, one can feel the power of religious culture and faith.
It's worth mentioning that the Naichun Temple within the Dazhao should be entered with caution; it seems to enshrine a deity similar to Yama in Tibetan Buddhism, with many skull patterns in the inner sanctuary, which can be a bit frightening when seen suddenly. The other halls are all worth a detailed look. If you get tired, you can find a cool corner to sit in, watch the flocks of pigeons and swallows chirping on the temple roof, see the golden light shining from the temple roof under the blue sky and sunlight, and deeply appreciate the unique scent of incense in the temple and the inner peace it brings.

Hohhot was once called 'Zhaocheng'. One explanation for this name is that Hohhot was initially very small, and a large Zhao (temple) occupied almost half of the city, hence the name 'Zhaocheng'.
Another explanation is that there were many Zhao temples in Hohhot, hence the saying 'seven big Zhaos, eight small Zhaos, and seventy-two continuous Zhaos'.
Today, in the old city's Yuquan District of Hohhot, the large Zhao, Xilitu Zhao, Wutasi, and other temples form a unique temple landscape.
Xilitu Zhao (the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units) is only a street away from the large Zhao. It was built during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era (1573—1620) by the leader of the Tumed Mongolian tribe to welcome the arrival of the third Dalai Lama. After continuous expansion and renovation, it became one of Hohhot's 'seven big Zhaos' and also a Lamaist monastery with a living Buddha as its abbot.
Xilitu Zhao faces south from the north, and the buildings along the central axis include the archway, mountain gate, Guodian (passage hall), Sutra hall, and the main hall.
The mountain gate of Xilitu Zhao has a plaque reading 'Ling Guang Si Che', which dates back to the 16th year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty.
The Bodhi Guodian has a plaque inscribed with 'Yinshan Ancient Temple' from the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty.
The main hall has a plaque reading 'Neng Ren Xian Hua', also from the 16th year of the Daoguang era; the second floor has a plaque 'Yan Shou Si'. The decoration of the temple is very elaborate, but it is not ancient and may be a modern reconstruction.
The Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty erected a stele commemorating the pacification of Galdan in front of the main hall.
On both sides of the central axis, there are also bell towers, drum towers, pavilions, warehouses, and dormitories.
Compared to the bustling large Zhao, Xilitu Zhao is much quieter and seems a bit empty and lonely.
The white marble double-eared Lama pagoda at the southeast corner of the temple complex is particularly striking.
It is a white marble Lama pagoda with an inverted-bowl shape, about 15 meters high, built during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty.
It is said that because the seventh and eighth living Buddhas of Xilitu Zhao died young, a white pagoda was built here to pray for the longevity of the living Buddhas, which is also known as the 'Longevity Buddha Pagoda'.
What is more surprising is that although there are three axes, the most important content is not in the central road but in the ancient Buddha hall on the west road.
The ancient Buddha hall is a relic from the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty and is the earliest existing building in Xilitu Zhao. The front part is the Sutra hall, and the back part is the Buddha hall, a pattern often seen in Tibetan Buddhism monasteries in Hohhot and Baotou.
Since photography is prohibited inside the Buddha hall, one can only briefly describe the interior. Upon entering the hall, one can see golden Buddhas arranged on three sides; the pillars are carved with lifelike dragons. The east and west walls of the hall are covered with exquisite murals. It is evident that the themes of the two walls are similar, mostly depicting the tracks of Arhats, and the southern side has large images of heavenly kings and landscapes that are also well painted. The murals use a combination of iron-line drawing and shading, which should be the precious and relatively complete Ming Dynasty temple murals existing in Inner Mongolia.
Xilitu Zhao is a very important Tibetan Buddhism monastery in Hohhot, with a complete layout, exquisite murals, and a beautiful white pagoda, all worth a visit...
