I rarely use the word "stunning" to describe a museum
Luoyang’s most easily overlooked hidden gem by name, the world’s only museum dedicated to ancient tombs, featuring 25 fully relocated and restored intact tombs. Capture the cool, ancient atmosphere effortlessly with no planning needed!
1. Must-see exhibition areas | photo spots + tips + reasons to visit
The underground exhibition hall is kept at a constant 18℃, perfect for summer cooling. You can walk through real ancient tombs, with intact brick and stone murals, fully immersive historical atmosphere, and no strenuous climbing throughout.
1. Underground corridor of ancient tombs through the ages (core must-see)
Reasons to visit: Complete tomb groups from the Western Han to Song and Jin dynasties, all dismantled and restored on site. You can personally enter tomb chambers from thousands of years ago and experience ancient burial culture firsthand.
Photo spots: Backlit silhouette shots at the tomb passage archway; side shots of the shadowless pottery figurines with natural light creating sword-like shadows; side captures of the Northern Song woman opening the door mural, full of storytelling.
Tips: Tomb passages are low; tall hats and loose high collars may hit your head. Flash photography is strictly prohibited to protect the murals from permanent damage. The floor’s blue bricks can be slippery when wet, walk slowly to avoid slipping.
2. Henan ancient mural gallery
Reasons to visit: Houses over 60 national treasure murals from ancient tombs, including brightly colored Tang dynasty ladies and Silk Road camel caravans, a rare underground art treasure trove.
Photo spots: Take portraits with ancient style lighting in the mural corridor’s light and shadow areas; eye-level shots in front of the camel caravan mural to capture the cool, ancient vibe.
Tips: The gallery is dimly lit; only use your phone’s regular fill light, strong lighting devices are prohibited. Do not touch the protective glass over the murals.
3. Northern Wei Emperor Xuanwu’s Jingling tomb (final highlight)
Reasons to visit: Complete original imperial underground palace, a 40-meter-long sloped tomb passage leading directly to the chamber, with a millennium-old celestial star map on the dome, predating the Dunhuang star map.
Photo spots: Wide-angle shots from the middle of the tomb passage to emphasize depth; upward shots of the starry dome at the bottom of the underground palace for an epic effect.
Tips: The underground palace echoes loudly, avoid loud talking. The tour is one-way only, no backtracking.
4. Song and Jin dynasty brick carving exhibition hall
Reasons to visit: Over 100 Song dynasty brick carvings depicting ancient banquets and daily life, like a 3D picture book of Song dynasty life.
Photo spots: Side horizontal shots of the brick carving arrays to capture rich detail and layers.
