If you have a short trip or layover in Cairo, here’s what I recommend after doing it twice! Day 1: Giza Book a hotel with a view of the pyramids to really soak in the magic. The first time we went, I stayed at the Hadla Inn. Giza is about 45 minutes from Cairo Airport. You can haggle with a taxi, grab an Uber, or do what we did—accept a ride from one of the private drivers who usually charge around $15–$20 to Giza. The view of the pyramids from our hotel was unreal—absolutely next level. Prices range from $80 to $300 a night depending on how fancy you want to get. I highly recommend booking a guided horse carriage tour (set it up through your hotel in advance). Expect to pay around $20 per person, plus the entrance fee. The reason I suggest going with a guide is that the pyramid complex is massive—you could easily spend a whole day wandering around. A good guide will save you time, take you to the best photo spots, and share some fascinating history. We loved our guide, Mohamad. He not only gave us a great tour but also helped keep the other aggressive vendors at bay, which we really appreciated. You can also go inside the pyramids and see the Sphinx up close, but just note that doing everything can get pretty pricey. Honestly, our three-hour tour felt perfect—we left feeling satisfied and grateful without going overboard. Day 2: Cairo We wanted to feel the hustle and bustle of the city before heading out, and it was awesome. From nervously crossing the chaotic streets to trying all kinds of food, we were so glad we spent a day here. (It’s about 25 minutes from the airport.) We started the morning with a walk along the Nile River and arrived at the Egyptian Museum about 30 minutes before opening. It gets very busy, so I definitely recommend getting there early. The entrance fee was super reasonable, especially considering the collection of artifacts inside—it's a must-see. Afterward, we grabbed shawarma and baklava (both amazing), then checked into our hotel nearby. We stayed at the Royal City Hotel—and I don’t recommend it. The room was okay, but the bathroom was so gross we barely wanted to shower. It was only $20 a night, so you get what you pay for, but I’d suggest spending a bit more unless you’re totally fine roughing it. The only upside? It was just a 5-minute walk to the museum. For your last night, head to the Carlton Hotel’s Rooftop Garden. The view of the city is stunning and it’s a relaxing way to wrap up your trip. The prices for food and drinks didn’t match the menu, but it was still affordable. I did a lot of research before going to Egypt, including looking at places to stay near the pyramids. I wanted somewhere convenient for visiting the pyramids, with beautiful scenery, and that wasn't too expensive. This hotel was perfect. It's just across the road from the pyramids, so you can see them from your bed. It's also right across from the Mena House, making it easy to go there for afternoon tea. The restaurant is also worth mentioning. It's full of Egyptian elements, and you can enjoy breakfast while looking at the pyramids.

The Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo is over 100 years old. It is a treasure in itself. The architecture and design are classic reflecting British influences. The Grand atrium is striking. Students and Egyptians get discounts, so be certain to bring an ID. #wintergetaway #wintergetaway

The fitness center at Mena House in Giza has first rate quality equipment. You can join for a fee if you live locally. The center is very clean and the staff very professional. The equipment is all in excellent working condition. Great Value. #wintergetaway #wintergetaway

The spa at Mena House is so nice. Prices for a 60 minute massage start at 885 Egyptian Pounds. The treatment tables are heated and the showers also have a steam feature. The staff are very professional. Highly Recommend, you do not have to stay at Mena House to come to the spa for treatments. #wintergetaway #wintergetaway

This triad of statues can be found in the Grand Museum in Cairo. The detail is amazing, you can see the muscles under the "skin" and the carving is also crisp. To be thousands of years old these are in excellent shape. If you go on Thursdays at night the museum is not as crowded, it is only open on Thursdays at night, not other days. #wintergetaway #wintergetaway
