The fairytale town in the Windmill Kingdom, truly a "Garden of Eden" by God
🇳🇱 The fairytale town of Giethoorn in the Netherlands, known as the "Venice of the Netherlands", is said to have been named after the many goat horns dug up by early coal miners here, and the name has been used to this day.
The best way to visit Giethoorn is to rent a boat and travel through the town with scenery as splendid as a painting, experiencing the comfortable lifestyle of the locals and admiring the beautiful pastoral scenery on the shores. Sometimes the scenery is picturesque, and sometimes the painting resembles the scenery.
🌈Travel Tips:
-Giethoorn is not big, one day is enough. It is recommended to drive there, which is very convenient. There is a free parking lot at the entrance of the village, and you can also park on the roadside with signs.
-During the tourist peak season, it is recommended to book a boat online in advance, so you don't have to waste time waiting. If it's not the peak season, you can also decide after you arrive. There are places to rent boats at the entrance of the village and along the road into the village.
-If the weather is good, be sure to apply sunscreen. It is not so convenient to wear a large brimmed hat and use an umbrella on the boat.
🌈Boat Rental Information:
-Boats can be rented on the official website, and some restaurants also offer boat rental services. I know of these three:
Giethoorn Netherlands
Bootverhuur De Deukten
Grachthof Giethoorn Restaurant & Bootverhuur
-Google Maps search will show the website, click in to find boat rental information.
🌈Food Information:
-Bootverhuur De Deukten, the boat rental place, sells some snacks, the fried fish and fries are very tasty, but the ice cream is not so good, avoid it.
-We had dinner at Grachthof Giethoorn Restaurant & Bootverhuur, the environment is nice and the service is good, with a quick serving speed.

Upon entering this tiny village, it's as if you've stepped into a fairy tale world
👸✨ The armor and masks of everyday life are quietly shed at this moment, allowing one's truest self to wander in this painted scroll, becoming a princess for a day.👸🏻
🖼 Each and every scene here is unique and enchanting. The sky hangs low, the clouds within reach, each frame like a masterpiece meticulously crafted by nature, requiring no filters.🌤
🛖 The reed-thatched roofs of the cottages, like rows of little mushrooms, each with its own charm. From the design of the houses to the facades, the colors of the windows, to the lawns of the courtyards, the pruning of the flowers and trees, even the arrangement of the tables and chairs, and the decoration of small objects, all exude a unique artistic flair.🎨
🚤 The waterway beauty of Giethoorn is even more distinctive. Rent an electric boat, take the helm yourself, who says a princess can't be in control?🛶 Once you get the hang of it, head towards Lake Bovewijde, with its winding rivers, clear ripples, and playful waterbirds, everything is under your control.🌊
⛵️ On the lake, we also met two guys sailing single-person sailboats. They were capsized by the waves time and again, but each time they bravely resurfaced and continued to chase the wind and waves. This perseverance and strength are truly inspiring.🌬
Giethoorn, a paradise on earth, also carries the tradition of sailing. The longing for freedom, the love for nature, and the desire to conquer are all inherited on this land.🌍
May we all become the princess and helmsman who can both gracefully enjoy the scenery and leave the storm behind.💪 Life is but a flip of the hand.🤚

Giethoorn in the Netherlands is truly a real-life version of 'God's Back Garden' - it's so beautiful
Off-the-beaten-path travel~ Let me introduce you to this fairy-tale town: Giethoorn. Interestingly, the village got its name because workers in the 18th century found a large number of 'goat horns' here 🐑 There are no roads for cars in the village, only paths for bicycles and boats 🚣 It's like a 'Venice of the North' in Italy.
Giethoorn is divided into a northern and a southern part. The center of South Giethoorn is filled with various shops for tourists to visit and enjoy 🚶 While North Giethoorn is where the locals live, very secluded~ The narrow waterways here are surrounded by historic thatched cottages 🛖 Visitors can take a boat or ride a bicycle to tour the village! The best season to visit is from May to August, with green trees on both sides and flowers blooming in front of and behind the houses 🌹 The reed-thatched houses have a medieval retro charm, it's really like a fairy-tale world~
✨【Must-Visit Attractions】
📍Molen Canal
The scenery and atmosphere here can be said to be the essence of Giethoorn. Stroll along the forest paths 🚶 or boat on the sparkling lakes, it's incredibly pleasant!
📍Farm Museum
It's converted from an old farmhouse 🛖 Traditional costumes, furniture arrangements, and authentically restored living scenes... each spot shows the genuine Dutch flavor~
📍Shell Museum
It displays a wide variety of shells, corals 🪸, pearls, and conch specimens, as well as a rich collection of jewelry and accessories! What is this? This is art!
📍Old Earth Museum
Most of the exhibits come from Rene Boissevain's private collection. You can see all kinds of exotic minerals and gems, and you can also buy some exquisite handicrafts 🛍️ They make dazzling souvenirs~

Giethoorn Smit Giethoorn: A tranquil water town and a dreamy journey.
🌿In the northeast of the Netherlands, there is a hidden paradise that seems to have jumped out of a fairy tale book - Giethoorn, and Smit Giethoorn is an unmissable starting point to visit this dreamland.🚤
🏞️Stepping into Giethoorn, time seems to slow down, and everything is immersed in tranquility and harmony. There are no noisy cars, no busy roads, only a crisscrossed river network and 176 exquisite small wooden bridges, gently connecting every household.🌉 When you stand on Smit Giethoorn, what unfolds before your eyes is a vivid watercolor painting, with rippling blue waves and shady trees, as if the whole world is still.
🛶Renting a boat and setting off from Smit Giethoorn is the best way to experience Giethoorn. The boat gently slides across the water, rippling layers of ripples, and the green houses on both sides leave charming reflections in the water, like a fairyland in the mirror. You can choose boats of different sizes and durations. The most economical four-seater boat costs only about 20 euros/hour, and the highly cost-effective tour around the east area costs only 7.5 euros. The whole journey takes one hour, allowing you to enjoy the scenery of the water town.🚣♀️
🏡The houses in Giethoorn are unique, with roofs covered with reed-woven materials, which are both environmentally friendly and practical, warm in winter and cool in summer, and perfectly integrated with the surrounding natural environment. These cottages are scattered along the river bank, each exuding a simple and charming atmosphere. As the boat slowly moves forward, you will be deeply attracted by these cottages, as if you can hear them telling stories of hundreds of years.🏠
🌸In addition to the charming natural scenery, Giethoorn also retains a strong historical and cultural heritage. The name here comes from the horns of sheep dug out from the ground when coal miners settled here hundreds of years ago. This legendary story adds a bit of mystery and romance to Giethoorn.📚
🍽️In your spare time, you might as well enjoy a delicious Western meal in a nearby restaurant, such as Beachclub Bodelaeke or Hollands Venetië, and let your taste buds also indulge in this tranquility and beauty.🍴
🌈Giethoorn Smit Giethoorn is a place where people linger. Whether you are boating or walking on the tree-lined path, you can feel the unprecedented tranquility and harmony. This is not only a tourist attraction, but also a habitat for the soul.💖

Giethoorn, the fairy tale village of the Netherlands.
【Giethoorn】
Giethoorn is so romantic and beautiful that it satisfies the imagination of a fairy tale world and is known as the "Venice of the Netherlands". In addition to experiencing this dreamy fairy tale world, I also want to learn about its story.
Giethoorn was named in the 18th century. At that time, most of the local land was sandy, with reed swamps everywhere, and other plants were not easy to grow. The resources were peat under the ground. In order to dig out more peat blocks, the residents continued to dig the land day after day, forming a series of narrow ditches. In order to facilitate the transportation of ships, the ditches were widened, forming the beautiful scenery of the intertwined canals and lakes today. In addition to coal, they also dug up many sheep horns underground, so they called it Giethoorn, and the name has been retained to this day.
The roofs of the houses here are all made of reeds. It is said that reeds were a substitute for poor people who could not afford bricks and tiles. Now the price of reeds is a building material that only the rich can afford, and the price is dozens of times that of bricks and tiles. Reeds are more durable than any building materials, and they can be used for at least 40 years, and they are warm in winter and cool in summer, rainproof and sun-resistant. The land price here has long been high, and the residents are mostly high-income professions such as doctors and lawyers. It is a typical wealthy area. Their homes usually occupy several houses, and there are their own farms in front of and behind the house. The homestay we live in is a passionate farm owner named Carin. She made the homestay as comfortable and complete as her own home. The front of the house is full of hydrangeas, which are the favorite of the locals. The front door is green and the indoor details and outdoor environment complement each other. It is also a pleasure in life to spend time here.
The best way to experience Giethoorn is to take a flat-bottomed wooden boat on the canal to shuttle through the quiet village and watch the fairy-tale life of different families on the canal bank. If you have plenty of time, you can spend two or three days to rent a small wooden house and a small wooden boat in the camping area, or rent a bicycle to wander in the boulevard, and enjoy such slow days in the most close to nature and relaxed state. Giethoorn. Train or Tour?
Giethoorn.
Should you join a day tour or go on your own?
For groups of two or more, I would recommend taking the train! There’s no direct transport from Amsterdam to Giethoorn, so you'll need to stop at Steenwijk to get a bus. A one-way train ticket is €25.6, but with a group ticket, 2-3 people pay €34, 4 people €38, and up to 7 people for €50. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours in total.
On the other hand, a day tour cost around €70-100, which might be more convenient, especially if you're traveling solo.
‼️Note: Group tickets are only valid during off-peak hours (before 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, and after 6:30 PM on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, they’re valid all day).

Spring Boat Trip in Giethoorn
Spring is the best season for an outing. I visited Giethoorn, the water village of the Netherlands, in spring. Of course, a boat ride is a must to experience the water village. The blue sky, white clouds, and spring breeze are what spring looks like in my mind. Although it wasn't the blooming season yet, just enjoying this fairy-tale-like water village from the boat was already wonderful. The boat rental is charged by the hour. We rowed for a total of two hours, and we were so happy that we didn't want to leave. So, we decided to take a leisurely walk on land to appreciate the water village. I hope to come back for an outing during the blooming season in the future.
A friendly reminder to arrive early. We were the first to arrive. When we started rowing, it was peaceful everywhere, which felt wonderful. After we finished rowing, we found the river was already crowded with boats. Even on land, you could only take pictures of the river full of boats.

Giethoorn, Netherlands
Make sure to set aside an entire day for your visit to Giethoorn, as the train ride alone takes 1 hour and 47 minutes. First, take the train to Steenwijk station, then catch bus number 70 or 270 from the bus stop in front of the station to Giethoorn, which takes about 15 minutes. So, from Utrecht Central Station to Giethoorn, it takes at least two and a half hours, which is enough time to travel from Amsterdam to Brussels!
The village got its name because early residents unearthed a large number of goat horns while digging for coal. Originally a secluded small settlement, Giethoorn gained fame after a movie was filmed there in 1958, and it has since become a major tourist destination!

Give me a canvas, and I'll return you a fairy-tale dream
Speaking of Venice in Italy, it's a place I've always wanted to visit...
However, this time I went to a place known as the 'Venice of the North', located in the beautiful water town of Giethoorn in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands. Giethoorn is called the Venice of the North because the entire village is surrounded by numerous waterways, just like Venice, so to enter, one must rely on boating or walking, as vehicles are prohibited.
Residents usually travel by boat or country lanes. The boat motors are noiseless, so the whole town is very peaceful and serene.
On my first day here, I chose not to take a boat tour because this exquisitely beautiful village must be explored on foot to truly appreciate every detail. Walking through the village was like watching a VR movie, exploring deep into the village and experiencing details that the average tourist does not see, and each detail was astonishing.
Almost every house here is waterfront, with the canals lined with exquisite fairy-tale cottages. The roofs of the houses are made of reeds, which are warm in winter, cool in summer, and durable. It is said that the reason for this roofing method is that in the past, people were poor and could not afford bricks and tiles, so they used reeds instead.
The houses along the canals each seem like a secret garden, but these gardens are not completely open. Standing on the riverbank, boating through the canals, one can see yards full of flowers and lush green grass everywhere. Here, without the hustle and bustle of modern life, there is only comfort and tranquility. Perhaps it is this tranquility and the fairy-tale-like atmosphere that makes the animals here very spiritual. The villagers do not live lazily; on the contrary, they live a life of refinement, with every household keeping their yard perfectly tidy and comfortable.
However, this superficial beauty gradually changes after nightfall. It is said that the majority of the people in the village are tourists from other places, and the number of actual residents or workers is not very large. We arrived in Giethoorn on a weekday afternoon, so by the time we had dinner in the village and walked to the river, there were not many people left. The paths that were crowded just a few hours ago suddenly became empty. The streetlights in the village were lit, but not all windows had light shining through them. So, although it is said that the few hotels in the town are actually fully booked, it seems that not many people actually stay overnight in the town. Compared to the bustling scene in the afternoon, Giethoorn at night actually seems a bit deserted.
The tranquility of Giethoorn may be unbearable if one stays too long, but having seen and experienced its beauty, it becomes a memory that was once part of life.
