Georgia is a must-visit winter destination! Here are some things to know.
"Are you here to attack xxx!!!!!!"
"Where are the attractions with no people!!!!"
Every time I go out during the holidays, I always ask myself these questions from the depths of my soul. As we all know, in China, seeking out niche travel destinations has become a popular trend!
If you don't want to be crowded when traveling in China and want to have a super comfortable travel experience, you might want to consider this visa-free and niche country - Georgia. It's so beautiful that it leaves you speechless!
If you ask me which season I like best in Georgia, the answer is definitely winter. If Georgia in spring and summer is "God's backyard," then Georgia in winter is like a snow kingdom favored by God.
If you want to find a cost-effective foreign destination to play in the snow in winter, I sincerely recommend you come here! It's visa-free and less crowded, so you can just grab your passport and go!
🍂Winter travel time:
December to January is the best time to visit Georgia's ski resorts, and the experience is amazing! There is a time difference between here and China, which is 4 hours behind China.
🔶About travel:
✈️Transportation: In China, only Urumqi has direct flights to Tbilisi. It is more cost-effective to transfer from Abu Dhabi, Turkey, etc. A taxi from the airport to the city center costs about 30 GEL.
🪪Visa: It is visa-free for 30 days, and the entry process is very smooth, taking only two minutes.
💰Exchange rate: It is about 1:2.7. It is recommended to exchange US dollars or euros in China, as RMB cannot be exchanged directly. Of course, you can also withdraw money directly from local ATMs.
📱Communication: It is more expensive to buy a card on Taobao, so it is recommended to buy one at the magti business hall at the airport. Although it is a little more expensive than in the city, it saves time and effort. A 7-day unlimited data card is usually enough!
🚖Taxi: You can use Yandex Go and Uber in Tbilisi. There are two subway lines here, and you need to buy a transportation card (2 GEL) to take the subway, which costs 1 GEL each time. You can check out the previous post for a guide on how to buy a bus card.
Winter limited niche attraction: "Georgia Snow Country Train Tour"

Georgia|Spend a Day Exploring Mtskheta and Gori
The ancient city of Mtskheta and Stalin's hometown Gori are both located to the west of Tbilisi. We opted for a car rental 🚗 to visit these two places in one day.
⭕️ Main attractions in Mtskheta:
✅ Samtavro Monastery
✅ Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
✅ Jvari Monastery
⭕️ Main attractions in Gori:
✅ Stalin Museum
✅ Gori Fortress
✅ Uplistsikhe (Cave Town)
🔸 Mtskheta is closer to Tbilisi, while Gori is a bit farther.
🔸 Gori can be reached by train. If not renting a car, you can choose the train 🚊 to visit Gori alone, but public transportation might take more time.
🔸 Among the above attractions, only the Stalin Museum 🏛️ and Uplistsikhe require an entrance fee 🎫.
🔸 Jvari Monastery and Gori Fortress are located at higher elevations, making them suitable for late afternoon 🌇 visits to enjoy the panoramic views. It is recommended to schedule Jvari last for its beautiful scenery overlooking the city and the river 🌊.
🔸 Samtavro Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral ⛪️ are close to each other, about a seven to eight-minute walk 🚶♀️.
🔸 The Stalin Museum and Gori Fortress are relatively close to each other.
🔸 Outside the Stalin Museum, there is a train carriage 🚞, a ground floor exhibition hall, and a small exhibition hall between the first and second floors that are all 🆓 free. Only the main exhibition hall on the second floor requires a ticket 🎫.
🔸 The arched columns in the corridor outside the museum are very photogenic 📸.
🔸 For lunch 🍽️, it is recommended to eat at the entrance of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where there are several restaurants.
🔸 We departed from Tbilisi at 10:30 AM 🕥, so we didn't visit Uplistsikhe in Gori. If you start earlier, it can be included in the itinerary.

Hiking into the Sapphire Waterfall around Kutaisi
The sapphire-like Martvili Canyon, this place must be in the top five in Georgia! Friends who come to Kutaisi must go and see it, it's really super beautiful!
From Kutaisi to Martvili is in the northwestern region of Georgia, where the humidity is generally high, and the branches and stones are covered with thick moss. Therefore, the water in the Martvili waterfall is always a light blue-green, cascading down the canyon and sparkling in the sunlight. It's very impressive to see in person, and there are also kayaking projects at the bottom of the canyon, which are great for taking photos.
Historically, the Dadiani family, who ruled Georgia in Zugdidi, also used this place as their favorite bathhouse for vacation.
There are hiking routes around, so interested friends can go for it!
🚗Transportation: 50Km from Kutaisi, it is recommended to drive by yourself, renting a car for 3 days costs 115 USD and you can explore the surrounding area.
🎫Tickets: 20 GEL for foreigners
💃One-day route: Depart from Kutaisi - see the Soviet abandoned buildings in Tskaltubo - take a boat to view the Prometheus Cave (you can skip it if you are not interested in caves) - Okatse Canyon - Khoni Waterfall - Martvili Canyon (the finale!)

Davit Gareji Monastery
Davit Gareji Monastery complex is located in the southeastern part of Georgia and is a historical and mystical religious site. Founded by the Syrian monk Davit Gareji in the 6th century, this monastery complex is scattered across various caves and cliffs of the Gareji mountain range, making it one of the most significant monastic complexes in Georgia.
Oh, Georgia. Just hearing the name of this country brings back thousands of beautiful memories. It’s a country where Teo and I travelled for a whole 3 months and we just can’t wait to go back. Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. It has its own unique language, incredible hospitality (even the cops are super helpful towards hitchhikers), many spectacular and unique places ( Svaneti, Vardzia, and Chiatura just to name a few), fascinating legends, a beautiful culture, and amazing mountains. #georgia
Love Town - Signagi
It's the 3rd stop on our journey through Georgia, and we've arrived at Signagi, the birthplace of wine, also known as 'Love Town'. The entire town is nestled at the foot of snow-capped mountains, making it incredibly romantic.
Here's a complete guide on how to get there, what to do, what to eat, and where to stay, shared with everyone!
How to get there
Take a taxi from the old town to Navtlugi intercity bus terminal, and upon arrival, someone will ask if you're heading to Sighnaghi.
The minibus costs 10 GEL per person, seats about 26 people, and departs at 9/11 AM every day. It leaves when full, so don't cut it close, or you might not get a seat.
The minibus conditions are quite basic, even a bit poor, and it takes 2 hours to reach the destination. The return times are at 4/6 PM, also leaving when full, so arrive at the station half an hour early to wait.
What to do
① Signagi Museum: A museum that tells the story of Georgian ethnography, tribal life, and traditional culture.
② Okro's Wine: A family restaurant where you can taste a variety of wine flavors. The atmosphere is particularly inviting, filled with the owner's care. The food is made to order, with the pork chops being especially delicious. You can also enjoy the view of the town and the mountains from the window seats.
③ St. Stephen Church: A dilapidated old church guarded by an elderly person, with an entrance fee of 1 GEL per person.
④ Cafemedea: Must-try red wine ice cream for 7 GEL, located below a fortress, offering a panoramic view of the town.
⑤ St. George Basilica: A landmark building of the town, but it seems not open for inside visits.
⑥ Signagi City Walls: The Great Wall surrounding the town, the largest fortress in the South Caucasus region.
If you still have time, you can walk back the way you came to a viewpoint on the mountainside to see the entire town; or you can take a taxi to Bodbe Monastery, about 3 kilometers away, which is the resting place of Saint Nino and attracts thousands of worshippers every year.
What to eat
In addition to the above, if you walk towards the city walls to the end, there are many restaurants where you can dine with a view.
Where to stay
Signagi is quite small, so there's no need to stay unless necessary. If you do want to stay, there are also many small hotels.
Kazbegi has never been to Georgia for nothing
Believe that everyone's recognition of Georgia starts with the photos of Mount Kazbek.
Here lies the church closest to heaven⛪️—the Holy Trinity Church, which stands particularly solitary against the backdrop of the snowy mountains.
If you go to Georgia and don't visit Mount Kazbek, it's truly a wasted trip😭
Mount Kazbek is the sacred mountain of the Caucasians, with Kazbegi peak at an altitude of 5033 meters. Although it is the third highest peak in Georgia, it is the most magnificent one among the Caucasus Mountains.
📜Legend has it that Prometheus, the fire-stealer🔥 in Greek mythology, was chained to this mountain by Zeus.
The Holy Trinity Church of Stepantsminda, perched among the clouds☁️ at an altitude of 2170 meters, is known as 'the church closest to the sky in the world'.
This church was built in the 14th century, located among the clouds at an altitude of 2170 meters, backed by the Kazbek snow mountain of over 5000 meters. From the town of Stepantsminda, people can gaze👀 at this sacred church and the snowy mountain from afar.
The Holy Trinity Church on Mount Kazbek is different from those uniquely shaped, eye-catching church buildings in Europe🤔. It is built in a simple and rustic style, blending with nature, and the entire landscape is not abrupt but enough to shake the soul.
In Georgia, there is a belief that to get closer to God, one must make an effort, and only true believers will overcome the numerous difficulties of the mountains👣 to reach the church at the top. This church embodies this spirit of faith.
‼️If you want to see the golden glow of the sunrise on the mountain🏔️, you need to check the weather and sunrise time in advance, and arrive at the viewing spot early to have a chance to see it.
‼️If you want to see the snowy mountains, it is best to go from November to April, otherwise the snow❄️ will melt.
amazing trip

A hidden gem in Georgia
Driving back to Tbilisi from Batumi, we visited the Prometheus Cave along the way. The Prometheus Cave is a very famous natural scenic spot, located in the Kumistavi village of Tskaltubo city in the Kumi River Basin. It is about 60-70 million years old, and the cave is narrow and long, resembling a galaxy with a total length of about 1.7 kilometers. We reached the deepest part 80 meters underground. There are 22 halls in total, but only 6 are open to tourists. I didn't post any photos of the cave, as it's impossible to capture the awe and wonder it inspires. It's better to leave some suspense for future explorers to experience for themselves. Outside the cave, there is a statue of the discoverer of the cave, Jumber Jishkariani.
We also visited the Martvili Canyon along the way. The canyon is deep and long, the river is clear emerald green, and the pure white waterfall rushes down from the high ground of the canyon, presenting a strong, highly saturated contrast of beauty. Passing through a village, a warm-hearted old man invited us to pick persimmons in his yard😊.

Fewer people, beautiful scenery, low prices, Georgia's Gudauri.
Gudauri, a ski resort in Georgia, is a small town 120 kilometers away from the capital, and is also on the way from Tbilisi to Kazbegi. The continuous snow-capped mountains, the azure sky, the warm sunshine, and the cute little houses... all of these are memories of Gudauri. Stepping on the thick snow, creaking and creaking, the feeling is beyond words. Under the sunshine, the snow emits a sparkling and shining light, as if diamonds 💎 are everywhere, very beautiful.
Travel tips
🚌Transportation: Take bus No.33 from the city to Didube Bus Station, then ask locals where to take the mini bus to the ancient trail. The fare is 8 lari and the journey takes about 2 hours.
🏠Accommodation: There are many hotels near the ski resort, but they are a bit expensive here. I stayed in an apartment, which cost about 90 lari.
🍔Food: Local restaurants are rare and the food is not very tasty. There is a large supermarket near the ski resort where you can buy some bread and snacks to satisfy your hunger.
🎿Ski equipment rental: The ski resort is free, and there are many shops under the snowfield that rent ski equipment. I rented a set for 40 Lari per day , including skis, boots, and poles. The hat costs an additional 10 Lari .
Wine country, Sighnaghi.
Saignon, the world-famous wine region. Pink houses, flat pebble roads, vintage old buildings... everywhere here is filled with a romantic atmosphere. From the small town, you can also overlook the vast Alpilles mountains.
This small town, described by "Lonely Planet" as very beautiful in the Kakheti region, has a history dating back to the second half of the 18th century. Sighnaghi was built by a capable ruler of Georgia in the 18th century. The purpose of construction was to protect the locals from raids by the Caucasus mountain people and to attract Armenian merchants and artisans to promote the economy of Georgia. Today, most of the ancient city walls and 23 towers are still preserved.
📍Transportation: Take the subway to Samgori station in the city center, the subway fare is 0.5 lari. After getting off the subway, walk through the underground passage to the bus station, where you can ask locals for the specific boarding location. Then take a mini-bus to reach Sighnaghi, the fare is 7 lari and the journey takes about 2 hours.

In the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, there is a place known as the "skier's paradise" - Gudauri (also known as Gudori) ski resort. As a skiing enthusiast, I have to recommend this magical place to everyone.
Gudauri Ski Resort is located in the Caucasus Mountains, 120 kilometers north of the capital city of Tbilisi in Georgia. It has over 50 different difficulty levels of ski runs, catering to the needs of beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. Even if you are a beginner, you can find a suitable ski run here and gradually improve your skiing skills with the help of private instructors.
Gudori Ski Resort's another highlight is its beautiful scenery. From the top of the mountain, you can see the wide valleys and canyons, as well as the spectacular high mountains. At the same time, the snow quality here is very good, delicate and soft, very suitable for skiing.
Of course, besides skiing, you can also experience other exciting activities here. For example, you can participate in various projects such as dog sledding, snowmobile, snowboarding, and parasailing, or relax your body and mind at local hot springs and sauna centers.
Here, you can also taste authentic Georgian cuisine, including Khinkali (a type of dumpling filled with meat, vegetables and spices), Khachapuri (a type of bread made with cheese, eggs and dough), and so on. In addition, the red wine here is also very famous, be sure to try it!
In short, Gudori Ski Resort is a place worth visiting. Whether you come alone or with family and friends, it will leave you with unforgettable memories.
