We started our trip from Munich by buying the "Bavarian Ticket," a great value one-day pass, from the station's automatic ticket machine! This ticket is fantastic because the price gets cheaper the more people you travel with, so we, a group of three, were able to save a lot on transportation costs (highly recommended!) ✌️ The train ride from Munich was a bumpy 2 to 2.5 hours each way. Enjoying the scenery from the window, we arrived in Füssen, close to the Austrian border. From there, we transferred to a bus for about 15 minutes to reach the foot of the castle. For getting to the castle after getting off the bus, we chose the shuttle bus without hesitation 🚌 (3.5€ one way, cash required!) After getting off the shuttle bus and walking for about 5 minutes... There it was, the castle we'd been seeing in pictures! The view from the Marienbrücke (Marien Bridge) was so breathtakingly beautiful that I was speechless and overwhelmed with emotion 🥺✨ (It's quite high up and the suspension bridge sways in strong winds, so those with a fear of heights need to be prepared! lol) From there, it was another 10-minute uphill climb. The castle, seen up close, was simply massive and overwhelmingly beautiful! I later learned that the construction had only been completed last year, and the exterior walls and surrounding area were sparkling clean and meticulously maintained. As with my usual whirlwind trips, I didn't go inside the castle, instead focusing on capturing tons of photos of the exterior 📸 lol On the way back, I leisurely walked down the hill and returned from Füssen to Munich. Actually, this trip continued even after returning to Munich 💡 The Bayern Ticket allowed unlimited rides on city trains and trams, so it was incredibly useful for going shopping and heading to restaurants for dinner! I was so impressed by how incredibly cost-effective this single ticket was, allowing me to travel for an entire day! We came this restaurant after we visited Neuschwanstein Castle and Maria Bridge. We ordered pork knuckles and potatoes salad. When they serve the food, it’s really impress us with the swan decoration. The food deco is Instagramable but the food quality was average especially the pork knuckle dish. The beer was good. The Via Claudia Augusta is an ancient Roman road that connected the Po River with the ancient Roman province of Raetia across the Alps, covering modern eastern Switzerland, northern Italy, western Austria, southern Germany, and parts of Liechtenstein, including Füssen. In the late Roman Empire, Fussen was one of the locations of the Roman Third Legion, whose main purpose was to guard the important trade routes in the Alps. Up above, the Hohe Schloss, or High Castle, sits in majesty with its richly coloured illusionist paintings. In the romantic streets of Füssen old town, medieval town houses sit alongside impressive Baroque churches. In summer, the many street cafés lend the old town district an almost Italian flair. Beautiful views can be enjoyed not only from the towers of the Hohe Schloss but also from boat trips on Lake Forggensee – including Neuschwanstein Castle against an Alpine backdrop. Traces of the Bavarian kings abound in Füssen. The Hohe Schloss above the old town, the former summer residence of the Bishops of Augsburg, was due to be woken from its slumber in the 19th century and turned into a residence for Crown Prince Maximilian, father of the Fairy Tale King, Ludwig II. But things took a different turn: on a journey through the Alps, Maximilian came across the ruins of Schwanstein Castle and had his castle, Hohenschwangau, built there, just a few kilometres from Füssen. Neuschwanstein Castle, famous for being the most beautiful in the world, is the ‘Swan Castle’ built by Ludwig II of the Bavarian royal family from 1869 to 1886 with light gray granite. It is said that it is because it looks like a swan gracefully landing in the Bavarian forest. Ludwig II, a 13-year-old boy who was engrossed in Wagner’s opera Lohengrin, wanted to build the beautiful castle that appears in the opera, and he is said to have been obsessed with building the castle without being interested in politics. After losing the war with Prussia and becoming a king in name only, his obsession with the castle grew even worse, and he poured the rest of his life and all his wealth into it, earning him the nickname of the ‘mad king’. But that’s understandable. If you think about how the construction materials were transported to such a high place, the workers must have died a lot. However, it is said that Ludwig II only stayed in this beautiful castle for 6 months. He was found dead by suicide in Lake Stallenberg in Munich before Neuschwanstein Castle, which was his everything, was completed. Along the way, more and more mountains came into view, and I finally caught a distant glimpse of a pure white castle perched on the mountainside. That was Neuschwanstein Castle.
