The Blue Pearl from a different Angle

It is the coastal wind – the beautifully named alizee, or taros in Berber – that has allowed Essaouira (essa-weera, or es-sweera in Arabic) to retain its traditional culture and character. For most of the year, the wind blows so hard here that relaxing on the beach is impossible, meaning that the town is bypassed by the hordes of beach tourists who descend on other Atlantic Coast destinations in summer. Known as the ‘Wind City of Africa’, it attracts plenty of windsurfers between April and November, but the majority of visitors come here in spring and autumn to wander through the spice-scented lanes and palm-lined avenues of the fortified medina, browse the many art galleries and boutiques, relax in some of the country's best hotels and watch fishing nets being mended and traditional boats being constructed in the hugely atmospheric port. Essaouira lies on the crossroads between two tribes: the Arab Chiadma to the north and the Haha Berbers in the south. Add to that the Gnawa, who came originally from further south in Africa, and the Europeans, and you get a rich cultural mix.

For trekking lovers, the geographical location of the Riad auberge Assounfou allows you to have a wide choice of walks between sand, lake, mountain and gorge where you can walk along a Oued (full or dried stream) animated by reeds, banana trees and various plants... City Defence

#celebratewithtrip The city's skala and ramparts are one of the things you definitely need to explore when you visit Essaouira, built as a city defence on the ocean in the eighteenth century. There are two levels to this fortification you can check out. The ground level that was used as a military storage area, now filled with little shops selling handicrafts, souvenirs. The top levels have bronze cannons and great views out to the sea, harbour. Walking along this area, you will be transported to the scene Games of Thrones that was shot on this spot. Only sounds of the waves crashing against the fortress and the sound of the seagulls permeated through the air. It was absolutely magical.

Beach just outside the medina

#celebratewithtrip Essaouira Beach is a vast, golden sandy beach located just outside the old town. Kite and wind surfers appreciate the optimal wind and wave conditions of this bay. In between cafes and restaurants you are invited to take a break, offering food and drinks. You can rent surfboards or beach chairs at one of the counters, activities like horseback riding, camel rides, quad tours can also be arranged. A real highlight is also the 5 kilometers long beach promenade, which encants with a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. Locals and tourists stroll up and down here, enjoying the view and watching the lively beach life, people dancing and playing along the promenade and beach.

Place Moulay Hassan

#celebratewithtrip Place Moulay Hassan is one of the most beautiful squares in between the port and the medina in Essaouira. Vendors selling their handicrafts in the square, groups of friends and families with their children stroll around there, with their children chasing pigeons and cats around there. View of the sea, there are cafes and restaurants around there, i visited Bab Laachour for my lunch, Bolognese Spaghetti and Prawn Omelette. At the end of the square, there are fish market stalls that are pretty much selling the same things, only you need to choose which one is fresher and cheaper.

The location for the Unsullied army scenes in 'Game of Thrones' was shot here. The Medina of Essaouira, as a representative fortified town of North Africa from the end of the 18th century, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. It is a place less trodden by tourists, which allows for a better glimpse into the authentic lives of the locals. Several buildings are painted in different colors, which is quite beautiful. In Arabic, Essaouira means 'picture-perfect.' Essaouira may not have the best beaches in Morocco, but it is famous for its wind. The city rightly earns its reputation as the 'Wind City of Africa,' with winds from the Atlantic visiting the town all year round, attracting many surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Since ancient times, Essaouira has been a melting pot of multiple ethnicities and cultures, with Arabs, indigenous African tribes, Berbers, and Jews all coexisting peacefully, creating a unique cultural landscape. The Medina of Essaouira has the ancient and noisy charm of Marrakesh and Fez, as well as the unique culture and atmosphere of a seaside town. The architecture here is also predominantly blue and white, the streets are not too complicated and are easy to navigate. Near the west side is the typical tourist area, where shopping is less bothersome than in Marrakesh and Fez, reflecting local characteristics and offering a comfortable experience. I personally really like it.

Essaouira is a wonderful little town on the coast of Morocco. And landing here after being to Marrakech is the perfect itinerary. In contrast with Marrakech’s loud and crowded streets, essaouira is an adorable town where the air smells of seawater and freedom. The little shops in the medina have creative and innovative items and the prices are much more in line with the local currency. The people are lovely and everything is walkable. You can even go for a surf lesson!

Beautiful town of Essouria, Morocco

Well worth the day trip to the coast of Morocco to visit Essouria. We stayed in Marrakesh for a week which was amazing, however, we took multiple day trips and one of which was to Essouria. This small fishing village was located on the west coast and took three hours to get there by coach. It was much more of a chilled vibe compared to the chaos of Marrakesh. Morocco trip pre exams!!!! #fallingseason #morocco #essaouira #workingholiday Went to Essaouira on a little short trip to Morocco. We went just before our university exam season. Managed to get a lot of good revision in while still checking out what the city had to offer. Definitely a place I’d recommend to visit. Also a milestone for me as my first time ever in Africa!!! What a lovely time. Went with one friend but I definitely came out of it with more. This is definitely one of my favourite aspects of travel, you come out having met such incredible people. I always try to have one takeaway from the a trip and I had one here too: only the simplest things in life can give the truest of pleasures

Dining at the Beautiful Al Khaima Restaurant

This restaurant is located in the old city center of Derb Laaloug, in one of the few open plazas. It has a great terrace for seeing the people and the excitement of the city. Upstairs there is another more intimate terrace that is sheltered from the wind. Typical Moroccan dishes like couscous, tagine, salads, and various grilled fishes and seafoods are available on the menu. It is quiet, the decoration is nice and it´s great for dinner. Portions are generous, and the prices are great. The entrees are between 5 and 10 euros so you can eat a full meal and a mint tea for less than 10 euros.

if it happens you traveled to Essaouira, joy of the south, this little town is beautifully decorated and a city to enjoy a day at sea. Surfing is very famous in Essaouira and most restaurants are fish specialties. Pay a visit to Madada restaurant, they have Mediterranean food and the food is really delicious.
