But Durrës is also that strange place, where often in the nets of ships remain jars, amphorae, bricks and ancient tiles, like those found on the walls of the City Castle. Durrës was founded as a colony by Corinth in 637 BC, on the basis of an Illyrian pre-urban culture, and even the name of the pre-Greek king called Epidamnus is preserved. #tripaway One of the destinations that in recent years has had a significant increase in the number of tourists is Cape Rodoni, located just a few kilometers from Tirana. This high peninsula-shaped strip of land stretches across the Adriatic Sea and offers attractive landscapes as well as several historical and cultural monuments of special importance. If during the spring the Cape starts and wears it all from a fairytale flower carpet, during the summer not a few are the ones who choose this place because of the virgin beach and the clean and fine sand. Skanderbeg Castle The cape, which is surrounded by living shrines about 25 meters high, is also known for Skanderbeg Castle. The castle located right by the sea was built by Skanderbeg around 1450 - 1452, in order to have a faster exit to the Adriatic in case of an Ottoman conquest. According to a treaty signed on February 4, 1462, in case of war with the Turks Ragusa would help Skenderbeu with its fleet that would be sent exactly to Rodon. According to Barletti's manuscripts, this castle existed until 1467, before the Turks came and destroyed it. The Venetians rebuilt the castle after 1500, and this has enabled it to arrive to this day in fairly good condition. Church of St. Anthony Very close to the Cape is the Church of St. Anthony, a monument that historically belongs to the same period of construction as that of the Castle. This building has a Romanesque-Gothic type of architecture, and today you can see traces of frescoes and other interesting elements. Thanks to the positioning near the Cape and the sea, the views that accompany the Church are truly impressive. Just 4 months ago I managed to get to the Adriatic coast of Albania. It was trip I even didn't planned but it was amazing. The town of Durres is the main town on the coast and probably the best in the region for sunbathing, 5* resorts and beautiful sunsets. 3-Day Albania Itinerary – From London to the Albanian Coast & Mountains Day 1 – London → Tirana → Durrës I landed in Tirana from London in the morning and headed straight to Durrës. Buses run frequently from the airport and city center, and the journey takes about 45 minutes. I checked into Villa Misiri, an apartment-style hotel in Durrës—comfortable, affordable, and close to the seafront. After settling in, I explored the promenade, the Roman Amphitheatre, and enjoyed fresh seafood by the harbor. Durrës has a relaxed vibe and is a perfect base for day trips. Day 2 – Day Trip to Theth & Snowy Albanian Alps I booked a tour through GetYourGuide to visit Theth in the Albanian Alps, and it was the highlight of the trip. The drive through the mountains was stunning, and Theth looked like a winter postcard—white snow, wooden houses, and complete peace. We visited the church, the famous Lock-in Tower, and enjoyed local food. It truly felt magical and well organized, so I highly recommend taking a guided tour if you don’t have a car. Day 3 – Berat & Back to Durrës In the morning I traveled by local transport to Berat, the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Such a charming and historic place with cobbled streets, Ottoman houses, and a beautiful castle overlooking the river. I stayed until sunset, then returned to Durrës by taxi since buses stop after around 5 PM. In the evening I relaxed at Durrës beach, enjoyed one last Albanian dinner, and the next day headed to Tirana Airport for my flight back to London. --- ### Helpful Tips - Use cash – many small places don’t accept cards. - Not everyone speaks English, so politely ask first; a translator app helps a lot. - Don’t rely fully on Google Maps for buses—schedules change. Ask locals or your hotel. - Best option is to rent a car if you can; otherwise day tours are very convenient. Albania surprised me with its beauty, kindness, and affordability. A perfect mix of mountains, history, and seaside in just three days!

A Perfect Beach Getaway in Meliá Durrës Albania ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our stay at the Melos hotel in Meliá Durrës Albania was absolutely fantastic and exceeded all our expectations. The location is prime – right on the beach, with stunning views of the Sea. We could step directly from the pool area onto the sand, which was incredibly convenient. The room was modern, very clean, and spacious, with a comfortable bed and a balcony that made for perfect mornings with a coffee. The true highlight, however, was the hospitality. Every staff member we encountered, from reception to the restaurant and bar, was friendly, professional, and went out of their way to help. The breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious, with a great mix of local and international options. We also enjoyed several meals at the restaurant; the seafood was particularly fresh. The pool area is well-maintained and a great spot to relax if you want a break from the beach. The city is affordable, easy to navigate with buses, and offers delicious food (don’t miss the baklava and tomato-egg dish!). Radio, in Tirana was the name of the bar we accidentally discovered but it was so lovely, we ended up going there twice. Durres Beach was peaceful and pretty, though Albania has better beach options if you’re looking to explore more. Our beach ‘golem long beach’, near Durres was quiet but isolated, and getting back in the evening was tricky—so plan transport in advance (especially check the last bus timings).
