There are many classic hotels throughout Japan, but none with a strange fate that stood at the depths of Japanese history as the Hotel New Grand in Yamashitacho, Yokohama. From its beginning, the New Grand was a hotel that hinted at the great waves of history. It opened in 1927. Yokohama had suffered devastating damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake four years earlier, and the central city area, which had developed ahead of the rest of the country since the port opened at the end of the Edo period, was reduced to ashes. Yamashitacho, which faces the port, was no exception, and all the hotels that mainly accommodated foreigners were destroyed. It became urgent to quickly but carefully restore the Yamashitacho area, which is the gateway to Japan, and the political and business leaders, led by the mayor of Yokohama at the time, joined forces to push forward with plans to build a new hotel, the New Grand. Takashi Isaka (1870-1949), who became the first chairman of the hotel, gathered an opening staff with international experience from his former employer, Toyo Kisen. Furthermore, through his connections, he invited Alfonso Dunant, the first manager, and Sally Weil, the first head chef, and established the framework as a first-class hotel in both name and reality. As Yokohama rapidly recovered as a trading port, New Grand joined the stage of global high society as its gateway and symbol. In 1932, Charles Chaplin (1889-1977) and in 1934, Babe Ruth (1895-1948) both visited New Grand when they visited Japan, and these memories became an additional chapter in their glorious journeys. One of the many foreigners who visited New Grand was Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964). MacArthur came to Japan on his honeymoon with his wife on his way back from the Philippines in 1937 and stayed at New Grand. However, just eight years later, when MacArthur arrived at Atsugi Air Base as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, he went straight to New Grand and stayed there for three days. It is unclear what MacArthur was thinking about the changed world situation, his own neighborhood, and the city of Yokohama, but the room he stayed in, "Room 315," still exists today under the nickname "MacArthur's Suite." Only guests staying at the hotel or on certain days can enter the rooms, including MacArthur's Suite, but you can experience the hotel's history in the cafe, bar, and lobby, which are open to non-guests as well. In particular, the first thing that catches your eye when you enter the main building's entrance is the large staircase. The Italian tiles are curved into the stone foundation, and the deep blue carpet called "New Grand Blue" is laid in the center, which is the true symbol of New Grand. The gradually rising structure, which skillfully uses perspective, can be seen as a clever production that builds a sense of exhilaration as you climb each step, making it more like a "stage" than a staircase. In fact, not only have many great people stepped on these stairs, but they are also popular as a location for taking wedding photos these days. At the top of the stairs is a CITIZEN clock. It seems to represent the important milestones in the history of New Grand, and this symbolic placement fully demonstrates the skill of designer Jin Watanabe (1887-1973), who is also known for designing the Wako Building in Ginza. Furthermore, the figures of heavenly maidens are embroidered around the clock, creating an exquisite balance between Japanese and Western styles. In the lobby upstairs, antiques and stone pillars create an even more stately atmosphere, but the contrast is highlighted by the lights of Yamashita Park outside the window and the faint sounds of countless motorcades passing by on the road. As I leisurely gazed out from the lobby at night at the portlights of the Hikawa Maru shining through the trees, I couldn't help but feel the profound flow of time in the drama of humanity and the times that unfolded in this hotel.
