[World Heritage Site: Hongcun] Compared to the Beijing Palace, Hongcun is a private palace

Hongcun, located in China's Anhui Province, is registered as a World Heritage Site along with Xidi as one of the "Ancient Villages of Southern Anhui." Because it is close to the World Heritage Site of Huangshan Mountain (just one to two hours away), the two are often visited together. The village was built 900 years ago in the 1100s by the Wang clan, and 137 buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties remain. At the entrance to the village is Nanhu Lake, which reflects the beautiful panoramic view of the village and the mountains in the background. There is also the moon-shaped Moon Pond in the center of the village, which also reflects the old townscape. Waterways run throughout the village, and the water is clean. Apparently, in the past, people would use the ponds to wash vegetables, do laundry, or whatever the time of day. You can tour the buildings in various parts of the village, but the center of the Hongcun building has no ceiling. In the past, this region was home to many merchants. They believed that rain represented money, and so they had no roofs to let the rain fall from the sky into their homes. The wooden carvings on the walls and doors are large and intricate.
