Xuzhou Lower City Ruins Museum

Xuzhou Lower City Ruins Museum Located in Pengcheng Square, Gulou District, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province. Based on the original archaeological site, the museum displays the living relics of the people in the Han and Ming dynasties in an "original site and original authenticity" way, and truly reproduces the vicissitudes of Xuzhou's city-building trajectory. The museum consists of functional areas such as the sunken square, foyer, prologue hall, water courtyard and site archaeological hall. The entrance hall introduces the overall situation of the Xuzhou City Underground City Ruins through pictures, real objects and videos. The Ruins Hall adopts the method of original site and original appearance protection, showing the unique landscape of Xuzhou's "city under the city, street under the street, well under the well" from the Ming Dynasty to the Han Dynasty. In the middle of the prologue hall, the seal with white characters on a red background of "Pengcheng" comes from the two words "Pengcheng" engraved on a pottery bowl found in an ash pit from the Warring States Period to the Western Han Dynasty during the archaeological excavation of the underground city ruins in the Confucian Temple Street District in 2021. The hall of the ruins displays more than a thousand square meters of Ming Dynasty streets, grinding platforms, house foundations, blacksmith shops, tofu shops, brick stoves, and Han Dynasty drainage channels... On both sides of the stone-paved North Gate Street, there is a row of rattan baskets forming a waterproof dam, which is the first discovery in Xuzhou's underground excavations over the years, and fully demonstrates the flood defense facilities in the civilian areas of the Ming Dynasty. An ancient Han Dynasty well with a well-preserved ceramic inner wall was excavated 12 meters underground. It has a history of more than 2,000 years. The well mouth has a diameter of 1 meter and the well wall is smooth and delicate, made of several sections of prefabricated ceramic well rings about 30 cm high. Complete Han Dynasty water wells are extremely rare in the archaeology of Xuzhou area and have important archaeological value.
