Qionghai Lake, located in Xichang City, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is the second largest freshwater lake in Sichuan Province. Known in ancient times as Qiong Pool, it is an early Pleistocene rift lake. The lake is shaped like a snail, stretching 11.5 kilometers from north to south and 5.5 kilometers from east to west, with a circumference of about 35 kilometers and a water area of approximately 30 square kilometers; the average depth of the lake is 14 meters, with the deepest point at 34 meters; the water surface elevation is between 1507.14 and 1509.28 meters; the water level fluctuation is small, with a catchment area of about 27 square kilometers. Qionghai Lake has a broad surface with rippling blue waves. The water is so clear that it resembles a huge mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and clouds. The color of the lake changes vividly, sometimes as blue as the sky, sometimes as green as jade, sometimes as golden as the sunset, and sometimes shimmering with sparkling waves.
