A Local's Private Gulangyu Island Scenic Route to Experience Its Unique Charm

As a native of Xiamen, I have deep affection for Gulangyu. Over a decade ago, the island was tranquil with few visitors, and the most delightful experience was getting lost among its old buildings, discovering their beauty under different lights and seasons. With increasing commercialization, I rarely visited in recent years. However, during a recent trip, I found my usual route remains unchanged, and I'd like to share it with those seeking the authentic Gulangyu. Starting from Jinjiang Inn Select Xiamen Airport Jimei School Village, take the metro or taxi to the ferry terminal for a convenient boat ride to the island. Locals can head to Piano Pier, pass by the giant banyan tree, China Construction Bank, KFC, etc., to reach Longtou Road Snack Street. Tourists arriving at Sanqiutian Pier can simply navigate to the snack street. "Longtou Fish Ball Soup" on the snack street is a genuine time-honored brand. Its shark skin wrapped around scallion-pork filling, though pricier and less flavorful than before, remains authentic. Nearby, "Egg Stuffed with Meat" uniquely stuffs meat into duck egg yolks, offering a distinctive taste worth trying. At the intersection near Egg Stuffed with Meat, you'll find "Lilixiang Wonton" and "Longtou Beizai Cake," both long-standing local favorites. Beizai Cake costs 5 yuan plain or 8 yuan with toppings, featuring a fragrant, slightly spicy curry flavor. Walking straight down Quanzhou Road from Beizai Cake, the initial commercial hustle gives way to quietude. You'll see Jin Gua Lou, with pigeons often flying over from the opposite resident's rooftop, creating a picturesque scene. At the intersection of Quanzhou Road and Yongchun Road, a kindergarten and Renmin Primary School are on the right. A short walk left leads to "Yongchun Road Lion Head," a great photo spot. Returning to the intersection towards Renmin Primary School, you'll find Trinity Church. Take the uphill path beside it to Bishan Road, where a white corner building offers serene beauty in the afternoon light, and the nearby former Mixed Court is also worth visiting. Further up to Bishan Park, the old maze is photogenic. For a higher view, head to Guancai Rock for panoramas of Gulangyu's northwest and Haicang District across the water. The slope on Jishan Road has excellent light around 3-4 PM—navigate to "Qinhai Manor Hotel" to find it. Near sunset, enjoy coffee on the hotel terrace with stunning dusk views. Gulangyu's true beauty lies in its quiet alleys. After exploring, return to Jinjiang Inn for a well-deserved rest.
