With its mix of colonial architecture, seaside parks, vibrant night markets, and laid-back island vibe, Xiamen offers a refreshing escape from the chaos of larger metropolises. My favorite part of the trip was visiting Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just a short ferry ride from downtown. This pedestrian-only island is famous for its preserved colonial architecture, peaceful gardens, and winding alleys filled with quirky cafés, music museums, and art galleries. Climbing up to Sunlight Rock, the island’s highest point, rewarded me with panoramic views of the Xiamen skyline and the endless sea beyond. Back in the city, I strolled along the Xiamen University campus, one of the most picturesque in China, complete with lotus ponds and serene paths. Right next door, Nanputuo Temple—a stunning Buddhist temple nestled against a mountain—offered a tranquil retreat, and the hike behind the temple revealed gorgeous views of the coastline. Evenings were best spent at Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, where I sampled delicious Fujian street food: oyster omelets, peanut soup, and grilled squid. The lively buzz of this area is a real taste of local life and hospitality. Best Time to Visit: October to April is ideal, with mild temperatures and less humidity. Avoid the summer if you’re sensitive to heat. Travel Tips: The Gulangyu Island ferry has two routes: one for tourists and one for locals—book early to secure your spot. Try local specialties like Shacha noodles and sea worm jelly (a delicacy!). Public buses are convenient and easy to use for getting around.
