Tiantishan Grottoes | Art Treasure House.

The Tiantishan Grottoes in Wuwei, the originator of the grottoes on the Hexi Corridor, are not to be missed. It was excavated in the Northern Liang period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sixteen Kingdoms (397-439), and is one of the earliest excavated grottoes. The high monk Tanyao of Liangzhou, who presided over the construction here, later presided over the construction of the Yungang and Longmen Grottoes. The Tiantishan Grottoes were announced as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. The grottoes have been severely damaged by wars and natural disasters over the years. The surviving cultural relics were mostly moved to the Wuwei Museum due to the construction of the Huangyang Reservoir, and a small part was exhibited in the Gansu Museum. At present, only the Big Buddha Cave is open in the scenic area. Looking around, there are some smaller grottoes distributed on the high cliffs, which are not open to the public. Passing through the Arhat Cave, when the Big Buddha Cave suddenly appeared in front of my eyes, it was hard not to exclaim in my heart! Under the dome of the Big Buddha Cave, each statue has a different expression; the murals remaining on the left and right walls of the cave are clearly presented in front of my eyes, and these murals are smooth and delicate, and the colors are refined. Look carefully at the Buddha's clothes, you can still see the elegant corners of the cassock still retain different shades of blue and some curly cloud patterns. The strong men standing on both sides are very clear in their clothing texture, and you can recognize the various details on the armor at a glance.
