#europeonbudget Trencherfield Mill is a cotton spinning mill standing next to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It was built in 1907. It was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in the 1930s and passed to Courtaulds in 1964. The mill was driven by a 2,500 hp triple-expansion four-cylinder engine built by J & E Wood of Bolton in 1907. The two halves of the engine were called Rina and Helen. They drove a 26-foot flywheel with 54 ropes at 68 rpm. The engine was stopped in 1968. The mill is now part of the Wigan Pier redevelopment area and is used for other purposes. Lovely autumnal walk along the river through the woods. A little muddy in places and could be challenging for the more unsteady of us but that's just to be expected for a woodland walk. #europeonbudget The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a canal in Northern England, linking the cities of Leeds and Liverpool. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal Act 1770 was passed in May 1770 authorising construction, and James Brindley was appointed chief engineer and John Longbotham clerk of works; following Brindley's death in 1772, Longbotham carried out both roles. Work was carried out in a number of phases and from Liverpool it had reached Wigan by 1781, replacing the earlier and unsatisfactory Douglas Navigation. The main line of the canal was not completed until 1816. A great asset to the town, walking with or without dog or cycling. A lot of the towpath is paved now from Martland Mill through to Top Lock. Leigh branch goes out from the base of the Wigan Flight out through the flashes if you prefer to stay relatively level.
