History Established between 1931 and 1940 by Scottish Captain Neil Boyd McEacharn, the garden was developed after he purchased the estate from the Marquise of Sant’Elia. Captain McEacharn transformed the property into a botanical garden, naming it “Villa Taranto” in honor of his ancestor, Étienne Jacques Joseph Alexandre MacDonald, whom Napoleon had titled Duke of Taranto . The gardens were opened to the public in 1952, and following McEacharn’s death in 1964, they have been maintained by a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving this botanical treasure . Garden Features Spanning approximately 16 hectares, Villa Taranto Botanical Garden is home to nearly 20,000 plant varieties representing over 3,000 species from around the world .
