While it may look cliché especially now in the age of social media, the allure of a place like Burano is something too hard to resist. Separated from the rest of the main Venetian lagoon, this cute village is an hour ferryboat ride away from San Marco’s square, and a must stop for anyone visited the Serenissima. Don’t be afraid to explore the many alleys, full of silence and out to dry laundry (so typically Italian!). You'll be shocked by how quickly your camera will fill up with photos! Every door, every facade will look like a postcard! Walk down the colourful canals and pop into one of the many cafes for a cappuccino and a tasty brioche. All while experiencing fewer crowds and noise than Venice. Before leaving, don’t forget to reserve a table in places like Rivarosa, revering the uniqueness of this small touristy, yet residential neighbourhood. One of the island's most striking features is its candy-colored buildings, each with a story of its own. As I wandered through the narrow canals, I marveled at the reflections of the houses in the shimmering water, creating a dreamy atmosphere that felt almost surreal. The locals take pride in maintaining these cheerful facades, a tradition that dates back centuries. Photographers and Instagram enthusiasts flock to Burano for the perfect shot, and I found myself taking countless photos, unable to resist the island’s charm. Burano is also famous for its lace-making, a craft that has been passed down through generations. I visited the Lace Museum, where I learned about the intricate techniques used to create this delicate art form. The skilled artisans still practice lace-making, and I was fortunate enough to witness a demonstration that showcased their incredible talent. Purchasing a piece of handmade lace felt like bringing home a tangible memory of the island’s rich heritage. As for the food, Burano did not disappoint. I indulged in local specialties, including the renowned risotto de gò, made with local fish. Dining at a waterfront trattoria while overlooking the colorful canals was the perfect way to end my day.
