The fortress of the Knights of St. John, another Game of Thrones filming location in Malta

Across the sea from Valletta, the capital of Malta, there is a city called the Three Cities, which has a longer history. The oldest of the three sister cities is Vittoriosa (formerly known as Birgu), which has a Fort St. Angelo at the top of the city facing the sea. It is located in the northernmost part of Vittoriosa and is the closest to the capital Valletta. 🔶Background: The fortress was first built in the Middle Ages and was originally called Maris Castle. It was rebuilt between the 1530s and 1690s by the Knights of St. John and named Fort St. Angelo. Due to its strategic location, it existed as a defensive structure in ancient times and is a magnificent seaside fortress. It was the main battlefield during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The battle ended with the Knights' victory. The Grand Master of the Order became a hero and the capital was moved from here to Valletta across the street, where it remains today. The fortress can be seen in its entirety from the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Malta. This is also one of the filming locations for "Game of Thrones". It suffered extensive damage during World War II and was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Experimental List in 1998. Standing on the highest floor of the fortress, you can see Valletta on the opposite bank clearly.
