Every European city must visit their cathedral

Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region) Its construction began in 1184 on the ruins of an older Christian cathedral, which in turn was built on top of a 10th-century Arab mosque. It is in Romanesque style, transitioning towards Gothic. The church is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and a prominent transept, above which rises an impressive octagonal dome. The nave ends with three circular apses. On the main facade we see two striking 12th-century Romanesque portals, and a magnificent rose window with openwork tracery. The vertical frame of the door features an image of the Virgin and Child. Inside, we can see towering 15th-century frescoes by Pere Johan. It is made of polychrome alabaster and its most striking feature is the trilogy of sculptures representing the Virgin, Santa Tecla and Santa Paula. The Archbishop’s tomb above the high altar is one of the temple’s Gothic treasures, as is the Santa Maria Chapel, which dates from the 14th century. At the Diocesan Museum, a fine collection of tapestries from a Brussels workshop and repaintings by Jaime Huguet stand out. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Catalonia
