Gifu｜Open the capsule that travels through time and space and experience the Edo style in Hida Takayama Sanmachi

Many people call Takayama Sanmachi the Little Kyoto of Hida. After actually visiting it, I found it to be a unique place. The old street that everyone is talking about is actually the one where you walk east for more than ten minutes after exiting Takayama Station and you will enter a world with a strong Edo style. Sanmachi is composed of three parallel streets: Kami-San-no-machi, Kami-Nin-no-machi, and Kami-Ichino-machi. During the Warring States Period, Toyotomi Hideyoshi sent Kanamori Nagachika to capture the Hida Takayama area, and Kanamori Nagachika became the lord of the Hida domain with 33,000 koku. Kanamori Nagachika used the ruins of Tenjinyama Castle to build Takayama Castle and planned the castle town at the same time. Later, the shogunate used political means to make Takayama a "Tenryo" and razed Takayama Castle to the ground, allowing the emperor to directly govern it. Looking back to the Edo period more than 400 years ago, this place was a gathering place for merchants and craftsmen, forming a prosperous business district. Today, the old buildings have been preserved, and the machiya buildings and "lattice" windows exude a simple elegance. The local brewery brewed sake for Reiwa, and the hospital was integrated into the streetscape, using a simple sign. Don't forget to taste the beef sushi filled with the sweet fat of Hida beef served on senbei.
