A Hidden Gem Straight Out of a Ghibli Film 🍃⛩️

If you’re looking for a mystical and peaceful escape in Kumamoto, Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine is an absolute must-visit. Tucked away in the quiet town of Takamori, this shrine feels like stepping into another world — some even say it inspired scenes from Studio Ghibli films, and I can totally see why! The stone stairway leading up to the shrine is lined with hundreds of moss-covered lanterns and towering cedar trees. As you walk through the torii gate and up the serene forest path, the atmosphere turns magical — cool, quiet, and full of ancient energy. The shrine itself is small but spiritually powerful. There's a sense of deep history and calm. I saw locals praying quietly, and even though I don't speak Japanese, the sacredness of the place speaks for itself. Tips: Wear comfortable shoes — the stairs can be slippery. Visit early in the morning for fewer crowds and beautiful misty forest views. There’s limited public transport, so renting a car is recommended. This was easily one of the most memorable stops on my Japan trip.
