Taipei｜The Showa romance of the Nishiki-cho government residence complex and the Japanese style in the heart of the downtown area

During the Japanese colonial period in 1922, Taipei City implemented a town name correction, adding the name of all the original streets and villages to "machi". Each town was further divided into chome. At that time, the area around Hangzhou South Road and Jinhua Street was called Jincho. The five buildings from the Showa period that remain today, each with ten households, were dormitories for employees of the Forestry Division of the Colonial Production Bureau of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office at the time, and were part of a group of official residences for middle-ranking officials. After historical evolution, it came under the jurisdiction of the Forestry Bureau of the Council of Agriculture. These Japanese-style wooden duplex houses with kirizuma roofs were probably Type C judges' quarters, and were therefore designated as historical buildings in 2007. The bamboo mud walls are covered with rain shower boards, the roofs are covered with Japanese black tiles, and all the buildings in the area are oriented north-south. After the assets were revitalized, commercial operations were introduced, including a mountain forest selection store, a fragrance brand, as well as wooden furniture and small items, which were organized to present a non-conflicting aesthetic. The wooden floor eaves corridor has been transformed into a display area for artists’ works, with greenery outside pouring in through the wooden windows, creating an atmosphere of peaceful and tranquility. One area is the Forestry Bureau’s curatorial space, which allows visitors to understand the types of Taiwan’s native forests through different pine cones.
