2024 Tainan Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)
There is an old saying in Taiwan: “To know Taiwan, you must begin with Tainan.” Tainan was the old capital city of Taiwan and has many famous historical sites and ruins. Chihkan Tower and the ancient Anping Castle are both captivating architectural antiquities from the time of Koxinga that have become part of the city's wonderful character. Of course, some people will be drawn here to track down a taste of Tainan's idol dramas, go to the night market for a big dinner, or to experience a bit of the artistic and literary flavor. You could easily devote a day to exploring the area on your own on foot and experiencing the friendliness of the people. It's very easy to fall in love with Tainan.

Follow Your Heart Travel the World Crossing Time and Space: The Cultural Charm of Anping Fort
At the end of June in Tainan, the scorching sun illuminated the ancient brick walls of Anping Fort, making them stand out vividly. On that day, I, along with a few French friends, set foot on this historic land. Despite the sweltering weather, everyone's enthusiasm remained undiminished. As my friends listened to the historical tales of Anping Fort, they were filled with interest and respect for this structure that has witnessed centuries of history. Watching their attentive expressions, I felt a deep sense of pride, knowing that the stories of this land were quietly taking root in the hearts of my foreign friends.
Tainan - TCRC Third Branch, a temple-themed bar and restaurant: Phowa
The word 'Phowa' is Tibetan, meaning the transformation and migration of consciousness energy.
As the third branch of TCRC, Phowa is a new type of bar and restaurant derived from TCRC. In addition to cocktails infused with local elements, the dishes are a collaboration with Feng He Da Jiu Jia, making it a true late-night diner!
The style of Phowa is vastly different from the old house bar of TCRC. It features a temple folk style, with traditional yet modern graffiti murals. The store sign is a large red embroidered dragon king flag, exuding the local festive atmosphere of Tainan.
Upon entering, there is a narrow path with green glowing ground, leading to a stone wall with a circular window in the center, offering a glimpse of the bar and bartenders. The left and right walls feature light sculptures of the Azure Dragon and White Tiger, symbolizing divine beasts guarding the heavenly palace.
In short, if you get a chance to book Phowa, you must try it. Whether it's the food, drinks, or the atmosphere, it will be a refreshing experience.

Tainan - Mr. & Mrs. Coffee House in the Alley: A Japanese-style Vintage Café
Located in an alley on Hai'an Road, Section 3, this café exudes a Showa-era Japanese atmosphere. The exterior features iron window grilles with Japanese bamboo blinds, and the interior is filled with dark wooden furniture, green leather sofas, and terrazzo flooring, creating a quaint and serene ambiance.
The coffee house, popular among the artsy crowd, has moved from the East District to the North District of Tainan, and its style has changed slightly. It seems to be run by a couple, hence the name 'He & She,' reminiscent of 'Mr. & Mrs.'
The space inside is not large, but it's quite comfortable. As usual, I ordered an iced Americano served in a vintage Suntory whiskey glass, with a faux silver base, handle, and tray that match perfectly.
In addition to coffee and desserts, the café also offers light meals such as toast and sandwiches, which seem to be quite popular. Plus, they open early at 9 am, making it a great spot for brunch.

Tainan's Best Value Single Cup Whiskey Shop: A Ray of Heavy Hits - Alcohol and Caffeine
Even locals in Tainan may not be aware that in the redeveloped area of Shuijiaoshe, a super large and stylish liquor store has opened in the Lijing Yanghe Building.
Whiskey and related books are displayed in a wooden bookshelf style, complemented by bright and grand floor-to-ceiling windows. During the day, sunlight streams in, filling the space with a literary and scholarly ambiance. At night, when the lights shine through, it becomes a low-key yet fashionable space for tasting spirits.
One must say, the owner has really invested heavily, creating a place that's quite different from the average liquor store!
A Ray of Heavy Hits has received high online reviews for its extensive selection of whiskey and rum, as well as its affordable prices. Calling it Taiwan's best single cup whiskey shop is no exaggeration—it's both professional and generous.
The shop also caters to non-drinkers, offering coffee drinks and desserts, along with a leisurely and comfortable environment. It's definitely worth a special trip to experience it and to expand one's knowledge of spirits!

Business Hours: 12:00-20:00 (open until 23:00 on Saturdays and Sundays)

Hidden Gem Restaurant at Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan
Wow, my trip to Tainan was such a jackpot! Staying at the Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel's Zui Yue Lou was like being in paradise! 😍
The hotel is really worth it, highly recommended to everyone! I stayed on the 38th floor, the view was superb, I could see the entire beauty of Tainan, it was such a treat! 🏙️
And their roast duck is so delicious, every bite is filled with happiness, I just couldn't stop eating! 🦆
The whole hotel environment is also very comfortable, making one feel very relaxed and content. The service is top-notch, every staff member is very enthusiastic and attentive, giving me the warmth of home. 🏨
In summary, my trip to Tainan was very satisfying, and Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel played a big role in that! If you're planning to travel to Tainan, you must stay here, it definitely won't disappoint! 👍
Shinbi Street's Unique Bar - Order Drinks with CD Albums: Kohaku
The naming logic of the establishment: 'Kohaku' means sound, which is the theme, as reflected in the design of the drink menu or the selection of audio equipment, which is particularly meticulous; the interior uses many amber-colored elements to echo the 'Kohaku' in its name.
As the establishment describes, upon entering Kohaku, one is immediately drawn to the acrylic-like translucent amber wave boards that attract the eye, hanging like ribbons from the ceiling, coupled with the amber-colored frosted partitions in the seating area, adding a touch of enchantment to the space, which is quite distinctive.
The drink menu design is also creative, using early transparent music CD cases, with the album covers replaced by four major categories of cocktails, ranging from light to strong, from sour to bitter, categorized into: Earth's Echo, Flower's Echo, Tea's Echo, and Forest's Echo, which are very easy to understand.
I remember ordering the Red Jungle with roselle and cranberry foam, perhaps because of its lower alcohol content? I heard it's opened by the well-known bar #Cage, but on weekends there's a minimum charge of two drinks per person, which I found a bit too much.

Experience the Coffee Culture of Southeast Asia without Visiting Laos: Laotian Coffee
Even if you haven't been to Laos, you can still experience the coffee culture of Southeast Asia in the alleys of Tainan with a cup of Laotian coffee. The tropical rainforest climate of the region is actually quite suitable for the cultivation of coffee trees, and it's likely that Laos, located inland in Southeast Asia, also produces coffee beans, right?
Turning into the alley from either Wu Garden or Xu Feng Hao, you can easily find Laotian coffee. The simple and clean white walls have a bit of the French colonial style of northern Vietnam, creating a peaceful atmosphere with coffee.
The owner is quite knowledgeable about coffee and will carefully explain the roasting and taste. I have visited twice, ordering black coffee and brandy coffee respectively. The Americano is very smooth, tastier and cheaper than chain brands; the brandy coffee has a rich aroma, with a light fragrance of alcohol and the bitterness of coffee combining to create a surprisingly sweet aftertaste, quite distinctive.
There are many unique small shops in the alleys of Tainan, especially coffee shops, each with its own special flavor or decor. Why not take a stroll through the winding alleys of the Central and Western District, and while you're at it, grab a coffee and some snacks from Laotian Coffee, then sit and cool off in Wu Garden, enjoying the leisurely pace of Tainan.

The Vinyl Record Store Turned Brunch Cafe: 44Bit Record Store.
Tucked away in the alleys of Tainan, the 44Bit Record Store is not only a vinyl record specialty store but also a brunch spot! Located next to the Bailong An Anqing Hall on Fuqian Road, it is a two-story old house with a facade of double-fired bricks that exudes a sense of the past, marked by a signboard hanging with the name "44Bit".
The old house is decorated with an elegant retro style, and inside, many vinyl records and antique collections are displayed, with separate exhibition and dining areas. While dining, guests can also wander around and search for albums from their own era, which is quite interesting.
The brunch menu offers paninis, burgers, pasta, and even a daily staff meal, along with various drinks and desserts. As for the taste, I've forgotten, but dining in this beautiful environment and taking pictures is truly beautiful!

Shennong Street in Tainan
I have visited Tainan several times, but this was a place I had not managed to visit until now.
I stopped by on my way back from the night market!
It was full of nostalgic atmosphere.
At this Instagram-worthy spot, everyone was stopping to take photos.
Even though it was a weekday, there were quite a few people around.
There were shops like bag stores, but it seemed more like a place to enjoy the atmosphere rather than to shop.
Rather than going out of your way, it might be better to just stop by when you're in the area for something else.
Michelin's Latest Recommended Restaurant - The Noodle Creativity Player: Wheat Mystery Food Lab
Wheat Mystery" is Taiwanese for "selling noodles," and "Food Lab" represents a playful creativity with food, which I interpret as "creative noodle shop".
The dining space is like a black teppanyaki private booth, where you can watch the cooking process up close while sitting at the bar. Noodles, side dishes, drinks, and desserts are handled by chefs specializing in four different courses, ensuring a precise dining experience within 60 minutes. The menu changes periodically, and the menu for May is as follows:
[Noodle Mystery] Choose two out of three:
1. Xuejia Non-toxic Shrimp: Served with thin noodles and a bowl of shrimp broth, which can be mixed dry or turned into a soup noodle, offering a rich and thick seafood flavor.
2. Pork Cartilage: Paired with an unseen "non-noodle" texture, shaped like rice grains but with the texture of noodles, the chef says it's a type of Italian pasta. Amazing!
3. Yilan Duck Delight: Not ordered, as it was only for two people.
[Side Dish Mystery] Order all five:
1. Smoked Sausage Scotch Egg: Fried preserved egg with a red yeast rice flavor.
2. Donut Shrimp Cake: The filling is a whole shrimp, similar to a shrimp roll.
3. Egg White Tofu: The texture is like the egg white of a three-colored egg, not a salted egg.
4. Tea-smoked White Goose: Replaced with duck delight, paired with a Caesar salad without lettuce.
5. Cantonese Superior Soup • Truffle Wonton: Excellent texture.
[Drink Mystery] Choose one out of five:
1. Nansi Starfruit + Tonic Water, a matured sweet and sour taste with a solid feel, plus the texture of sparkling water.
[Dessert Mystery] Choose one out of two:
1. Showa Pudding (not eaten): Taiwanese banana x Vietnamese coffee x coconut milk.
2. Green Pistachio Roselle Puff: This one is delicious and photogenic.
In conclusion, the restaurant plays with noodle dishes in new ways, offering varied flavors and rich layers, making it well worth the experience. However, the restaurant has limited seating, so it's best to make a reservation in advance.

Chill yet Luxurious Thai Cuisine and Wine Bar: Malibu
On my first visit to Malibu, I was immediately captivated by its exterior, enveloped in palm trees. Pushing the door open, I was even more astonished by the extravagant decor, with crystal chandeliers, drapes, and Buddha statues, embodying the Thai ambiance I had in mind—subtle yet luxurious chill vibes.
Malibu has been serving Thai cuisine for a while and doubles as a bar. It offers Taiwanese-modified Thai dishes that cater to the slightly lighter taste preferences of Taiwanese people. The mild spiciness of the minced pork with basil is just right, unlike the overwhelming heat you'd find in Bangkok! The green curry, stir-fried string beans with stinky tofu, and shrimp cakes are all perfect with rice, and it's great to pair them with a pot of sweet and sour tamarind juice.
The staff is enthusiastic and friendly, with diligent service. They frequently check on customers' tastes and needs, and even treat them to fried banana cakes as a dessert after the meal. Thai desserts are indeed very sweet! Malibu is a beautiful place with a Thai vibe and the warmth of Tainan hospitality.

Lin Department Store & Mountain Sea Tofu Pudding
Address: 5th Floor, No. 63, Section 2, Zhongyi Rd, West Central District, Tainan City 700, Taiwan
Atmosphere/Facilities: Perfect for a break
Budget per person: I visited in February and again in April, and noticed that the price of some tofu puddings has increased... For example, the recommended Comprehensive Silk Tofu Pudding is now NT$90, whereas it was NT$80 two months ago. With the yen weakening (this time it was over 4.9 yen to the yuan), it's a bit sad.
Rating: ★★★★☆
It's hot, so I always stop by for a break.
The tofu pudding is delicious. One is never enough.
This time, I also had pineapple shaved ice at the neighboring Lin Coffee.
Ah, I'll go again!
