Suzhou | A Poetic Stay at Sugaoxin Tanglu Hotel by Taihu Lake

This Dragon Boat Festival, I chose to escape the crowds and seek tranquility at Sugaoxin Tanglu Hotel in Suzhou. Nestled by the eastern shore of Taihu Lake, the hotel is just steps away from breathtaking lake and mountain views. The entire property features a Jiangnan watertown architectural style with white walls and black tiles, with no building exceeding two stories—resembling an ancient Jiangnan village that immerses guests in a serene getaway. Upon arrival, the lobby’s furnishings and greenery harmonize with the outdoor scenery, where guests are welcomed with wellness tea they can customize to their liking. Guest rooms are scattered across different courtyards, each with unique public areas—some overlooking the lake, others surrounded by bamboo—while private dining rooms and fitness facilities are seamlessly integrated. Exploring the grounds on the hotel’s provided tandem bicycles, guests can enjoy afternoon tea under floral canopies amidst fluttering butterflies, sip signature cocktails in the "Land Boat," try their hand at catching fish by the pond, or simply unwind by Taihu Lake’s serene vistas. I stayed in a Deluxe King Room, which offered a choice of soft or firm pillows, a cozy lounger at the foot of the bed, and an armchair by the window for tea and relaxation. A large-screen TV ensured a cinematic experience in-room. The bathroom featured dual vanities with a full-length mirror, a smart toilet in a separate wet area, a rain shower, and a freestanding tub. Toiletries included mini Dove products and a custom six-piece set. Breakfast blended local Suzhou noodle dishes and desserts, delighting both culture and palate. Before departure, I strolled through the hotel’s bamboo-lined pathways, where a small pond mirrored the surrounding cottages and trees. A globe-shaped art installation painted with Van Gogh’s "Starry Night" and field scarecrows added playful charm to the retreat. Breathing in the fresh lakeside air, the getaway experience came full circle.
