Explore History at Panmen Gate, Suzhou

If you're visiting Suzhou, another historical site worth checking out is the Panmen Scenic Area (盘门景区). Panmen Gate is a significant historical landmark in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is located at the southwest corner of the main canal or the moat surrounding Suzhou. Originally built during the Spring and Autumn period in the State of Wu, historians estimate it to be around 2,500 years old. Today, it is part of the Panmen Gate tourist area, known for the "Three Landmarks of Pan Gate": 1. Ruiguang Pagoda, the first pagoda in Suzhou, built in 247 AD. 2. Wu Gate Bridge, the entrance gate at that time, which crossed the waterway and was the highest bridge in Suzhou at that time. 3. Pan Gate, with the Ruiguang Pagoda built of brick, a wooden base, and simple Buddhist carvings at the base.
