Shangri-La Suzhou: A quality choice in a prime location 1. Hotel overview and room selection I stayed in a Horizon Club Deluxe King Room at Shangri-La Suzhou, which cost CNY 1,100. I chose this hotel mainly because of its excellent location and the fact that it is an old hotel that is still well maintained. I would give it an overall rating of 8.5 out of 10, with 9.5 for location, 8 for views, 7 for rooms, 6.5 for service, 8.5 for breakfast/executive lounge, 8.5 for fitness facilities, and 9 for value for money. 2. Room features and minor flaws The room is less than 70 square meters, with a one-bedroom, one-living room layout. It is very spacious and has the classic luxurious style of Shangri-La. The view is great, and the night view is amazing. However, there are some minor issues, such as the fresh air system not being able to adjust the room temperature. The temperature in the high-floor rooms is high when the sun is shining directly on them. Even in December, with the air conditioning on full blast, the room temperature can reach 28 degrees. I had to ask the staff to open the window to cool it down. The toiletries are the classic small green bottles, and there is a smart toilet, but the water system seems to be unusable. The mini bar is chargeable, and one of the two phones in the room, the one by the bed, was broken. 3. Highlights of the public areas The public areas are excellent. The fitness area is one of the best I've seen in hotels this year. It is spacious and has unique facilities such as a basketball machine and a stair climber. The yoga room even has a boxing ring. The swimming pool is also one of the best among old hotels. The water temperature and depth are comfortable, and there are green plants and a large dome around it. The dry and wet steam facilities are all working, and there is a dedicated rest room in the changing room where you can rest and watch TV. The executive lounge has enough food to fill you up, and the hot dishes are delicious, with dishes such as duck and braised pork. The breakfast also exceeded my expectations, with delicious braised pork noodles and other specialties such as large tangyuan. 4. Service and elevator situation In terms of service, the Horizon Club service is relatively average. The wine is not replenished quickly, and the computer was slow when I checked in, which took more than ten minutes. In addition, the elevator waiting time is long when there are many people. Overall, apart from the room temperature issue, Shangri-La Suzhou has obvious advantages in other aspects, which outweigh the disadvantages. Considering its moderate price, it deserves a high rating.
