Suzhou's 43rd garden: Shijiantang Chujing Garden Shijiantang was built in the 6th year of the Jiaqing period of the Qing dynasty (1801). It is laid out as a residence with a garden to the east. The name Shijian comes from the Records of the Grand Historian: "If future generations are virtuous, they will learn from my frugality; if they are not, they will be corrupted by power." Chujing Garden is the back garden of Shijiantang. The name comes from the Book of Han: "Bring the classics and hoe." It means to govern with an iron hoe. The garden covers an area of only 420 square meters, but it is small yet grand, and cleverly laid out according to the terrain. The garden is complete with pavilions, flowers, trees, and rockeries.
