Wufeng Garden

Wufeng Garden is located at No. 15 Wufeng Garden Alley, deep in the lanes, and is a small garden open to the public for free. Wufeng Garden was originally built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty and was listed as a Suzhou cultural relic protection unit in 1963. The garden features five towering Taihu rock peaks, resembling elderly men, also known as the Five Old Men Peaks, which are individually named 'Zhangren Peak', 'Guanyin Peak', 'Sanlao Peak', 'Qingyun Peak', and 'Qingyun Peak'. In the southwest corner of the garden, there is a mound, which is said to be the tomb of Liu Yi. Liu Yi is said to have been a Confucian scholar of the Tang Dynasty, living in Xiatang below Changmen. Near his residence, there was a bridge named after him, marked on the 'Map of Pingjiang' from the Southern Song Dynasty. However, Liu Yi is more widely known for his role in opera stories. In the Tang Dynasty novel 'The Story of Liu Yi' by Li Chaowei, the protagonist Liu Yi delivers a letter to rescue the dragon girl of Dongting, and later marries her. The Yuan Dynasty zaju play 'The Story of Liu Yi Delivering a Letter' is based on this story. Later, the phrase 'Liu Yi delivering a letter' became an idiom, meaning to brave dangers to save others in distress.
