The predecessor of Yan's Garden was the 'Lingyan Mountain Residence' of Shen Deqian, a famous scholar and anthologist of poems from the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty. It is said that Emperor Qianlong once visited this place and enjoyed a pleasant time discussing poetry and admiring the moon with the highly esteemed poet Shen. In the eighth year of the Daoguang era (1828), Shen's descendants transferred the property to Mudu poet Qian Duanxi. Qian added rockeries, dredged ponds, built pavilions, and erected towers... In 1902, Yan Guoxin, the wealthiest man in Mudu, purchased the garden.
