THE JAGIR SLUICE GATE

The Jagir Sluice Gate, which is a heritage building from the Dutch era in the city of Surabaya, is located on Jalan Jagir, Wonokromo, Surabaya, with a towering tower that stands firmly and has the function of regulating water flow and anticipating flooding. This building has also been designated as a cultural heritage by the Surabaya City Government. Entering the fence towards the floodgate, on the left side there is a wooden wall hanging attached to the wall. The sound of water is quite loud flowing from the west to the east. It functions to control the activities of the Jagir river so that flood inundation in the Surabaya area can be reduced. Standing proudly in the middle of the Jagir River, Surabaya, the Jagir Wonokromo Sluice Gate blocks the flow of water which is sometimes abundant. Sometimes he also holds various types of garbage that are washed away and caught in his legs. For the people of Surabaya, the existence of the Jagir Water Gate has its own meaning. Besides being known as an icon of cultural heritage, this building also provides extraordinary benefits. Because from time to time, the sluice gate, which is now managed by the Surabaya Regional Drinking Water Company (PDAM), plays a major role in regulating the flow of water entering Surabaya, including maintaining the amount of PDAM water stock. The construction of this dam was intended to facilitate the condition of Surabaya as a trading city for the Dutch East Indies at that time. Because the system was very good at that time, finally Surabaya was called Amsterdam From The East. And in the construction of this dam, the Dutch government mobilized thousands of Indigenous people to dig up 5.6 kilometers of land and become a jagir river. Until now, this floodgate still functions as a flood control in Surabaya. The ancient building is well maintained. The existence of the Jagir Water Gate is a blessing in itself for the surrounding community. The area around the Jagir River is often used by visitors for fishing. Inevitably, this opportunity was used by some people to set up a shop for fishing equipment and other fishing equipment. Some visitors are desperate to swim, even though there are signs prohibiting swimming, because when the rainy season arrives, the water of the Jagir River rushes for mercy. #naturalwonders#beautifulsunsets
