I went expecting lovely gardens and a bit of architecture, but I left with a deep sense of connection to the stories that shaped this remarkable estate. Coughton Court has been home to the Throckmorton family for over 600 years, and their story is woven through every room — from political intrigue during the Gunpowder Plot to the peaceful rhythms of family life today. Standing in the Long Gallery, I could almost hear whispers of the past — portraits watching silently, polished floorboards echoing with the weight of centuries. What truly moved me was the sense of quiet resilience. Coughton’s Catholic history, hidden chapels, and secret spaces tell tales of faith held through persecution. There’s an emotional richness here that lingers long after you leave. Outside, the gardens are simply spectacular — a mixture of formal borders, tranquil riverside paths, and wildflower meadows. I visited in mid-May when the wisteria draped across the courtyard in soft purple blooms, and the scent followed me everywhere. The Roses Garden was just beginning to open, promising an unforgettable bloom season ahead. Best time to visit? Late spring to early summer. May and June are especially lovely when the gardens are in full bloom and the weather’s gentle enough for long walks by the river.
