The Teochews (a Chinese dialect group) nicknamed the area Kangkar, which means “river bank”. Sampans would ferry children along the Serangoon River to the Catholic schools in the Kang Kar area for 2 cents. The Kang Kar Village was demolished in 1984 for the construction of the Ponggol Fishing Port.
