A rare glimpse of the past in Shenzhen

With Shenzhen being such a modern city it can be hard at times to find any interesting cultural or historical sites. The city is home to countless malls and skyscrapers and sometimes it’s nice to escape that and have a change of scenery. Dapeng old city is the perfect day trip to escape the concrete jungle and take in some history. The origins of the walled fortress town date back to 1394 and has been altered and expanded ever since. It has beautiful ancient walls and viewing towers that surround a network of old cobbled streets, alleyways and courtyards. These days they are filled with gift shops, restaurants and street food stalls along with small museums and temples. It’s such a relaxed vibe compared to Shenzhen and it’s worth a day trip just to wander the streets and experience the street food. You can also wander along to the nearest beach on the Dapeng peninsula for more seafood and shopping.
