Lu Town, Shaoxing | An Underrated Free Treasure of an Ancient Town

Lu Town may not be found on the map of China, but it is the setting for the classic stories in Lu Xun's novels. Today's "Lu Town" is a rural-themed park in the Keqiao Scenic Area of Shaoxing, meticulously restored based on Lu Xun's descriptions. Here, one can find the folk customs and architectural charm of old Shaoxing town, as well as natural landscapes. Stepping into Lu Town is like traveling through time and space, back to the old Shaoxing filled with charm. The streets of the ancient town are lined with neatly arranged ancient dwellings with white walls and black tiles, bustling shops by the river, and serene and solemn temples with curling incense smoke. Stone arch bridges come in a thousand shapes, stone-paved roads are quaint, and deep water alleys crisscross. Here, Shaoxing's bridge culture, stone culture, water culture, wine culture, and culture of notable figures intertwine, forming beautiful pictures. Locations from Lu Xun's novels, such as the Lu Family Ancestral Hall, Kuiwen Pavilion, Jingxiu Nunnery, and Tugu Temple, have also been carefully restored and presented. The architectural style of "Lu Town" typically reflects the characteristics of Shaoxing's white bricks and black tiles, a river, a lake, and two streets, making one feel as if they are in a water town where "every household rests by the river, and pavilions overlook the boats." Although this "ancient town" is a bit newer compared to real ancient towns, its cultural connotations and historical significance cannot be overlooked. Here, we can experience the spirit of the times contained in the characters and stories of Lu Xun's works, as well as the unique charm of Shaoxing's water towns. The Lu Town Grand Theatre in the Lu Town scenic area, featuring the "Lu Town Community Opera," is well worth a visit. The stage effects are truly stunning! The Lu Town Community Opera recreates the most authentic Lu Town of a hundred years ago, including the classic characters from Lu Xun's literary works... Recalling the few remaining true memories of childhood, it takes us through our youth... Synopsis: The performance follows the story of a primary school student who accidentally travels back to Lu Town a hundred years ago and cannot find a way to escape. It realistically portrays the ups and downs of the fates of classic characters such as Ah Q, Sister Xianglin, and the Madman under the oppression of the old society's feudal rites, ultimately leading the student, under the guidance of Lu Xun and his illuminating articles, to chant with Ah Q and everyone else, carrying the memories back to the real world.
