Former Site of Shanghai Alcohol Factory

Located at No. 200 Nantang Road, Pudong New District, Shanghai, the former Shanghai Alcohol Factory is now part of the modern architectural complex of Shanghai Solvent Factory. It was listed in China's Industrial Heritage Protection Catalog in 2019, preserving 9 European-style villas and industrial relics. Established in 1933 by Indonesian-Chinese entrepreneurs Huang Zongxiao and Huang Jiangquan in collaboration with the National Government's Ministry of Industry, the factory began production in December 1934. As the largest and most technologically advanced alcohol production facility in the Far East at that time, it ended China's reliance on imported alcohol. Equipped with British machinery and employing the Amylo fermentation process, it produced 30,000 liters of 96.7% pure alcohol daily. The factory was bombed and damaged by Japanese forces during the 1937 Battle of Shanghai, but was later restored by patriotic overseas Chinese Dong Yinchu after the war. In 1954, it was reorganized as Shanghai Solvent Factory. The red-brick buildings with red-tile sloping roofs originally served as dormitories for executives and staff, and now form part of the InterContinental Shanghai Expo hotel.
