#favouriteitinerary Zhang Yuan, established in 1882, was once the largest and most unique public activity space in Shanghai during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. With over 140 years of history, it holds rich cultural significance. In 1885, Zhang Yuan began to open its doors to the public for free, becoming the largest public park in Shanghai at the time and earning the title "Shanghai's No. 1 Garden." After 1918, Zhang Yuan gradually transformed into a residential area with Shikumen-style alleyways and garden residences. Today, it is home to the largest and best-preserved Shikumen building complex in Shanghai, showcasing the richest architectural styles. The garden retains 13 Shanghai historical buildings, 24 cultural heritage sites in Jing'an District, and 5 planned preservation buildings, each with its own unique history. The western part of Zhang Yuan has been the first to undergo renovation and is now open to the public. This area covers an architectural area of approximately 20,000 square meters, including 16 historical buildings such as Deqing Lane, Rongkang Lane, Zhenxing Lane, Xiude Lane, and Furu Lane, as well as three garden-style villas.
