Yangpu Riverside Winter Tour

Yangpu Riverside is located in the northeast of downtown Shanghai, adjacent to the Huangpu River. It is one of the birthplaces of modern industry in China. It was home to China's first waterworks, power plant, gas plant, and more than ten other "firsts" in China, witnessing the glorious history of China's national industry. The history of Yangpu Riverside can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1882, the Shanghai Machine Weaving Bureau, a government-supervised and merchant-managed enterprise, began production, marking the start of industry in the Yangpu area. Subsequently, Chinese and foreign enterprises built factories in the area, forming an industrial zone centered on textiles, cigarettes, and machinery manufacturing. By the 1920s, the Yangshupu area had become a large industrial zone with busy docks along the river. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Yangpu Industrial Zone became an important industrial base in Shanghai, relying on its previous "family background." In the history of Yangpu Riverside, many important events and figures are worth remembering. For example, Chen Duxiu once worked in a yarn factory here and published articles on the labor conditions in Shanghai in the New Youth magazine, describing the industrial prosperity of the Yangshupu area. In addition, before the full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the national industry in the area had developed to more than 300 enterprises, demonstrating the economic vitality of the time. In recent years, Yangpu Riverside has transformed from an "industrial rust belt" to a "life show belt." By the end of 2017, the 45-kilometer public space along the Huangpu River was fully connected, and the southern section of Yangpu Riverside was fully opened. The municipal government promoted the upgrading of the public environment space along the river and returned the river to the people through measures such as relocating enterprises and building new green spaces. Today, Yangpu Riverside has become an urban area integrating commerce, leisure, tourism, culture, and other functions, showcasing a new look and function.
