In the early 20th century, when the great powers were building concessions in Shanghai, the area including the walled Yuyuan Garden flourished as a bustling downtown area. Later, half of the Yuyuan Garden site was divided and developed into a commercial area that retains the appearance of the time. Narrow alleys are lined with vermilion architecture that recreates the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the area is known as a tourist spot that retains the good old Shanghai, with traditional crafts, souvenirs, and restaurants selling xiaolongbao. To get to Yuyuan Garden Shopping Center, take subway Line 10 to Yuyuan Station and get off at the station and it is about a 10-minute walk away.
