A Living Embodiment of Korea’s Heritage – My Visit to National Museum of Korea

#seoulspots Set in Seoul’s Yongsan District beside the Han River, the National Museum of Korea is the country’s leading cultural institution, housing over 310,000 artifacts spanning prehistory to modern times. Opened in its current location in 2005, the museum’s sleek glass-and-stone structure is as impressive as its contents. I arrived just after the 10 AM opening and spent nearly 2.5 hours exploring its permanent exhibitions. The first-floor Prehistory & Ancient History Gallery introduced me to Paleolithic tools, Bronze Age daggers, and golden Silla crowns. The Medieval & Early Modern History Gallery on the second floor featured Goryeo celadon, Joseon white porcelain, and rare court paintings. A highlight was the towering Ten-Story Pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple, displayed dramatically in the central hall. Upstairs, the Calligraphy and Painting Gallery and Asian Art Gallery added broader context, with rotating pieces from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. I also visited the Children’s Museum, a delightful, hands-on area great for families (free with advance booking). The museum grounds include a peaceful reflecting pool, sculpture garden, and panoramic views of Namsan. Before leaving, I browsed the excellent gift shop offering traditional crafts and tasteful souvenirs.
