A special day at Hyangwonjeong, where Joseon’s elegance lives and breathes

I will introduce you to the beautiful treasure of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hyangwonjeong. The way to get to Hyangwonjeong from Seoul Station is very simple. Take Line 1 from Seoul Station to Jonggak Station, then transfer to Line 3, get off at Gyeongbokgung Station, and exit through Exit 5. You can reach Gwanghwamun, the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, in about 5 minutes on foot. After entering Gyeongbokgung Palace, pass Gyeonghoeru and continue north to find Hyangwonjeong, located in the rear garden of the palace. Hyangwonjeong is a beautiful two-story pavilion located in the rear garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The name “Hyangwon (香遠)” means “the fragrance of lotus flowers that spreads far away.” Built in the 4th year of King Gojong’s reign (1867), this pavilion is built on an artificial pond, making it look as if it is floating on the water. It is especially charming because it is located on a small island in the middle of the pond. This building, with its octagonal roof in the form of a two-story pavilion, is considered a representative example of the beauty of late Joseon Dynasty pavilion architecture. What impressed me the most when I visited was the changing appearance of Hyangwonjeong depending on the season. In winter, the snow-covered landscape presents a wonderful charm. In particular, if you take a tour with a guide, you can hear various stories related to Hyangwonjeong.
