Zuihoden, located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture This building is actually the grave of Date Masamune. When Masamune died in Edo at the age of 70, he was buried in Kyogamine, where the cries of the cuckoo can be heard, as per his will, and rests in the basement of Zuihoden. The graves of 15 vassals and 5 subordinate vassals who committed suicide prior to Masamune's funeral are lined up around it as if to protect him to this day. I've seen this mausoleum in photos, but the vividly colored sculptures were amazing when I saw it in person.
